Definitions of Homicide
Intentional Homicide:
- Definition: "Unlawful death inflicted upon a person with the intent to cause death or serious injury" (International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes [ICCS]).
- Key components:
1. Killing of a person by another: The act of one individual resulting in the death of another.
2. Intent of the perpetrator:
- Subjective element: The perpetrator must have the intention to kill or to cause serious injury to the victim.
3. Unlawfulness of the killing:
- Legal element: The act is considered unlawful, making the perpetrator liable under the law for the resulting death.
Types of Violent Deaths
Overview of Violent Deaths:
- Can be classified into various categories:
- Killings directly related to war or conflict: Deaths occurring in war-like situations.
- Non-conflict related deaths: Homicides occurring outside of war contexts.
- Self-inflicted deaths (suicides): Individuals causing their own deaths.
- Intentional Homicide: Deliberate killings of one person by another.
- Killings in self-defense: Loss of life which occurs as a reaction to a threat, where the use of deadly force is justified.
- Killings during legal interventions: Deaths that occur as part of law enforcement actions, provided there is no excessive use of force.

Definition of Interpersonal Homicide:
- Homicide viewed as a method for resolving conflicts and/or punishing the victim through violent means, usually when relationships face strain.
Subcategories of Interpersonal Homicide
Intimate Partner/Family-Related Homicide:
- Homicides that occur within intimate relationships or among family members.Homicide related to other interpersonal conflicts:
- Homicides stemming from disputes or tensions not specifically categorized as intimate or familial but related to interpersonal relationships.
