Energy Analysis of a Cart on a Ramp

Overview of Experiment

  • Objective: Study the energy dynamics of a cart as it:

    • Receives a short push.

    • Rolls up a ramp.

    • Slows to a stop.

    • Rolls back down the ramp.

Setup

  • Origin Placement: Near the bottom of the ramp to simplify analysis.

  • Motion Detector Location: Positioned at the bottom of the ramp. Caution: Ensure that the cart does NOT collide with the motion detector during the experiment.

PreLab Predictions

  • Graphs to Analyze: Students are required to predict the shapes of the following graphs vs. time:

    1. Position vs. Time

    2. Velocity vs. Time

    3. Potential Energy vs. Time

    4. Kinetic Energy vs. Time

    5. Total Mechanical Energy vs. Time

  • Turnaround Point Denotation: Each graph must clearly indicate the point at which the cart reaches its highest position before rolling back down the ramp. This is referred to as the turnaround point.
