Presente

Definition

The presente is used to talk about what is happening now, what happens regularly, and what is generally true.

Think: what is happening, what always happens, what is true.

Examples in English:

  • I talk to her. / I am talking to her.

  • We listen to music every day.

  • They eat pizza on Fridays.

When do we use the presente?

Use it for:

  • Actions happening right now

  • Habits and routines

  • Facts and things that are generally true

  • Near-future plans (Mañana trabajo – Tomorrow I work / I'm working)

Common time words:

  • ahora (now)

  • hoy (today)

  • todos los días (every day)

  • siempre (always)

  • normalmente (normally)`

  • a veces (sometimes)

  • nunca (never)

Spanish has no separate "I am talking" form: hablo means both "I talk" and "I am talking."

How the presente works

Take the verb, remove the ending (-ar, -er, -ir) to get the infinitive, then add the ending that matches who is doing the action.

hablar → habl + o = hablo

Regular Verb Endings

-AR verbs (hablar, escuchar, comprar)

Ellos

-ER and -IR verbs share the same endings except for vos (-és vs. -ís: comés, vivís) and nosotros (-emos vs. -imos: comemos, vivimos).

Important Pronunciation Tip

  • Hablo (I talk – present) ≠ habló (he/she talked – pretérito). The accent mark changes the tense.

  • Hablamos (we talk) and hablamos (we talked) are spelled the same for -AR verbs. Time words tell you which one it is: hablamos hoy vs. hablamos ayer.

Simple Examples

  • Hablo con mi amigo todos los días. (I talk with my friend every day.)

  • Escucho música ahora. (I am listening to music now.)

  • Comemos en casa. (We eat at home.)

  • Ellos estudian español. (They study Spanish.)

Practice

Conjugate these correctly:

  1. Hoy (comer) pizza – Hoy como pizza. (Today I eat pizza.)

  2. (Trabajar) en Samsung – Trabajo en Samsung. (I work at Samsung.)

  3. Todos los días (caminar) – Todos los días camino. (Every day I walk.)

  4. Mis amigos (vivir) en Londres – Mis amigos viven en Londres. (My friends live in London.)

  5. Nosotros (escribir) mensajes – Nosotros escribimos mensajes. (We write messages.)

Irregular Verbs

Irregular verbs do not follow the regular endings, so they have to be memorized. They are also some of the most common verbs in Spanish.

Ser, Estar and Ir – completely irregular

Person

Ser (to be)

Estar (to be)

Ir (to go)

Yo

soy

estoy

voy

Vos

sos

estás

vas

Él / Ella

es

está

va

Nosotros

somos

estamos

vamos

Ellos

son

están

van

Ser vs. estar – both mean "to be":

  • Ser: what something is – identity, origin, profession, characteristics. Soy de Inglaterra. (I am from England.)

  • Estar: where something is and how it feels right now – location, mood, condition. Estoy en casa. (I am at home.)

Dar, Ver and Saber – irregular only in yo

Person

Dar (to give)

Ver (to see)

Saber (to know)

Yo

doy

veo

sé

Vos

das

ves

sabés

Él / Ella

da

ve

sabe

Nosotros

damos

vemos

sabemos

Ellos

dan

ven

saben

All the other forms are regular, so only the yo form needs memorizing.

Yo-go verbs – the yo form ends in -go

Person

Hacer (to do / make)

Poner (to put)

Salir (to leave / go out)

Yo

hago

pongo

salgo

Vos

hacés

ponés

salís

Él / Ella

hace

pone

sale

Nosotros

hacemos

ponemos

salimos

Ellos

hacen

ponen

salen

Three more yo-go verbs also change their stem vowel in the él and ellos forms:

Person

Tener (to have)

Venir (to come)

Decir (to say / tell)

Yo

tengo

vengo

digo

Vos

tenés

venís

decís

Él / Ella

tiene

viene

dice

Nosotros

tenemos

venimos

decimos

Ellos

tienen

vienen

dicen

Stem-changing verbs

The vowel in the stem changes in the yo, él / ella and ellos forms. Nosotros and vos keep the original vowel, because the stress falls on the ending (querés, podés, pedís).

Person

Querer (e → ie)

Poder (o → ue)

Pedir (e → i)

Yo

quiero

puedo

pido

Vos

querés

podés

pedís

Él / Ella

quiere

puede

pide

Nosotros

queremos

podemos

pedimos

Ellos

quieren

pueden

piden

More verbs that follow the same patterns:

  • e → ie: pensar (to think), empezar (to start), preferir (to prefer)

  • o → ue: dormir (to sleep), volver (to return), encontrar (to find)

  • e → i: servir (to serve), repetir (to repeat)

Examples

  • Tengo hambre. (I am hungry.)

  • Hago la cena. (I make dinner.)

  • Salgo a las ocho. (I leave at eight.)

  • Quiero café. (I want coffee.)

  • ¿Podés ayudarme? (Can you help me?)

  • Duermo siete horas. (I sleep seven hours.)
