Summer and Fall 2026 Dual Enrollment CCAP Kickoff Notes

Welcome and Introduction to CCAP Dual Enrollment

  • Event Background: This session serves as the kickoff for the Summer and Fall 20262026 Dual Enrollment College Career Access Pathways (CCAP) program at Riverside City College (RCC).

  • Host: Dr. Acevedo, the Educational Resource Adviser for the dual enrollment program.

  • Target Dates:

    • Summer term classes begin on Monday, June 2222.

    • Fall term classes begin on August 2424, 20262026.

  • Adviser Availability: Students can access Dr. Acevedo via text, phone, or appointment for support throughout their terms.

Understanding CCAP Dual Enrollment

  • Definition: The College Career Access Pathways (CCAP) program allows high school students to earn college credit simultaneously while completing high school requirements.

  • Financial Benefits:

    • The program is entirely free for students and parents; tuition and textbooks are included.

    • Estimated savings: A typical community college class costs approximately $250\$250 without financial aid, while courses at University of California (UC), California State University (Cal State), or private institutions can cost thousands of dollars.

  • Academic Credit Conversion:

    • One college credit generally equates to approximately 3.333.33 high school credits.

    • A standard college course worth 33 to 55 units can provide about 1010 high school credits.

  • GPA and Academic Rigor:

    • College courses provide a Grade Point Average (GPA) booster similar to Honors or Advanced Placement (AP) classes, usually worth one additional point.

    • Research indicates that students who enroll in college while in high school have a higher percentage of continuing post-secondary education past high school.

  • Alternative to AP:

    • CCAP can be an alternative or a supplement to AP classes.

    • Example: A student can take English at the college level (such as English C 1,0001,000, formerly English 1A1\text{A}, or English C 1,0001,000 level 22 or 33, formerly English 1B1\text{B}) to fulfill high school English requirements in a single term rather than a full year of AP.

Student Expectations and Responsibilities

  • First-Week Inactivity Rule: Students must log in and show activity during the first week. Professors will drop students for inactivity if they do not meet initial requirements, such as responding to an introduction email or completing an introductory assignment.

  • Academic History and Transcripts:

    • College courses become a permanent part of the student's academic transcript.

    • Withdrawals (W): If a student drops after the deadline (usually Wednesday or Thursday of the first week of summer or within two weeks for fall), a "W" remains on the transcript.

    • Grades of D or F: These are permanent and can negatively impact future financial aid eligibility.

  • Financial Aid Implications:

    • Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requires maintaining a GPA of 2.02.0 or higher and a progression rate of 67%67\%.

    • Future eligibility for FAFSA or the Dream Act depends on these early college grades.

  • Communication: Students are expected to check Canvas announcements and their RCC student email daily for class cancellations or assignment updates.

  • Office Hours: Students are encouraged to use professor office hours or schedule appointments to build relationships and ensure success in the material.

Academic Calendar and Intensity

  • Summer Term (6 weeks): This is an accelerated term. The same workload usually done in a 1616-week semester is condensed into 66 weeks. Students are advised to "lock in" because the pace is significantly faster.

  • Fall and Spring Terms (16 weeks): These are standard length terms.

  • Scheduling: Summer classes are often Monday through Thursday (e.g., 08:3008:30 to 10:4010:40 for in-person high school sessions). Fully online classes have no set meeting time.

Accessing College Systems: Portal, Email, and Canvas

  • Welcome Email: Students must locate their "Welcome to Riverside City College" email, which contains their ID number and college email address.

  • MyPortal Login:

    • URL: portal.rcc.edu

    • Username: The assigned RCCD student email address.

    • One-time Password Formula: Capital First Initial+lowercase Last Initial+MMDDYY (2-digit birth year)\text{Capital First Initial} + \text{lowercase Last Initial} + \text{MMDDYY (2-digit birth year)}. Example for Dr. Acevedo (born 10/02/199610/02/1996): R+a+100296=Ra100296R + a + 100296 = Ra100296.

  • Canvas: The Learning Management System (LMS) comparable to Google Classroom. Assignments, content, and the syllabus are found here. Professors publish these pages by the first day of class (Monday).

  • Microsoft 365 / OneDrive: Students should use OneDrive for documents like Word instead of Google Docs to ensure compatibility with professor grading systems.

Support Services and Troubleshooting

  • Textbooks: High school students typically pick up physical textbooks or access codes at their high school library.

  • Technical Support Contacts:

    • Admissions: For missing welcome emails or ID/email issues.

    • Welcome Center: Virtual drop-in hours Monday through Thursday, 22 to 44 PM for password resets and login help.

    • Help Desk: For locked accounts.

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy: AI tools like ChatGPT should be used as professional brainstorming tools, not as a crutch. Dr. Acevedo warns that professors can identify unauthentic entries because AI lacks access to specific course-only lectures and materials.

Questions & Discussion

  • Question: Will classes be Monday through Friday?

    • Response: In-person high school classes are usually Monday through Thursday. Online classes have no live Zoom meetings and are self-paced within the weekly deadlines.

  • Question: When will Canvas show my classes?

    • Response: Classes will load on the dashboard on Monday, June 2222 for summer. If nothing shows before then, the professor simply hasn't published it yet.

  • Question: Can I retake a class?

    • Response: You can retake a class if you failed it, but you cannot retake a class you have already passed.

  • Question: What if I am using a Chromebook?

    • Response: Chromebooks work, though some documents might have formatting issues. Norte Vista and district-specific issues with the Respondus LockDown Browser for quizzes have supposedly been fixed.

  • Question: What if the email field in my welcome email is blank?

    • Response: Forward that email to Dr. Acevedo or contact Admissions to have your college email assigned properly.

  • Question: Is there a mandatory meeting on Monday?

    • Response: No. Monday is simply the day you should log in to your course to read the syllabus and begin work.
