Limbic System Anatomy
Limbus Definition
- Limbus is a Greek term meaning "ring."
- The limbic system is a ring-like structure located in the center of the brain.
Limbic System Components
- The limbic system contains cortical areas and key subcortical structures deep within the brain.
- Hippocampus (shown in green)
- Anterior thalamic nuclei
- Amygdala
- Adjacent cortical areas
Corpus Callosum and Surrounding Cortical Areas
- Corpus Callosum:
- A large fiber bundle.
- Connects the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
- Cortical Areas:
- Cingulate gyrus: Located dorsally, surrounding the corpus callosum.
- Retrosplenial cortex: Dorsal areas.
- Perirhinal cortex: Cortical areas surrounding the hippocampus ventrally.
