Symbolism

Language is symbolic because it can represent things without being physically similar to it.

symbols can be arbitrary

  • Crib: Means bed/slab for someone’s house

  • it is raining act and dog

Literary symbolism outs together two things that are in some way dissimilar, it rarely comes to equation of some sort. It is more complicated than regular symbolism

Allegory and Myth

  • Allegorical means there is more behind something that can seem so clear

symbolism is like the main point of the story sometimes



CLAIM: the claim about the reflection paper is symbolic of her mental health or yellow paper being symbolic as mental abuse. Analyze how the wallpaper represents being trapped in that room. Add unto how it may be relevant

PG 883: she talks about the lady in the wall trying to break through the bars but couldn’t

872: she disagrees with her brother and husband trying to make her stay home and forbidding her from work. She tries to fit the stereotype that is given by her brother and her husband

875: She talks about liking the room but with the beautiful room and the airy space but the look that is given in the wallpaper not liking it, slowly noticing the pattern that is being seen and also wishing john listens to what she wants when she talks about paying her cousins a visit

877: John wants to send her to someone and also she notices that she’s getting worse. She starts studying the pattern of the wallpaper and she gets more fond of the room stating “maybe it is BECAUSE of the wallpaper”

881: She notices how the wallpaper changes in different lights. When the sun is out it makes a very quick change hard to catch. While during the night time it looks more like a woman behind bars. She mentions John telling her to sleep more and she notices how John and his sister sometimes stared at the wall



Evidence from Moore’s story

  • separating the victim from friends and family,

  • dismissing the victim’s feelings and of symptoms

  • shaming the victim on belittling

  • controlling the victim’s finances and preventing them from working.

  • she sides with emotional abuse but she doesn’t go into dept about the emotional abuse mostly talking about physical abuse
