a stimulus triggers depolarisation at A 

  1. voltage-gated sodium ion channels open at node A and sodium ions diffuse into the axon

  2. this depolarises the axon making the inside positive relative to the outside

  3. the sodium ions are attracted to the negative charge at node B creating a localised electrical circuit between node A and B
