2. Keratinocytes - Most important cells in the epidermis.
3. Stratum basale- Contains a single layer of columnar cells actively dividing by mitosis to produce cells that migrate into the upper epidermal layers.
4. **Arrector pili** - Smooth muscle that produces "goose bumps" when it contracts.
5. **Melanin** - The quantity of this pigment is the basic determinant of skin color.
6. **Stratum corneum** - Composed of layers of dead, anucleate keratinocytes completely filled with keratin that constantly shed.
7. **Malignant melanoma** - Most serious form of skin cancer.
8. **Vitamin D** - Type of vitamin synthesized by the skin.
9. **Stratum lucidum** - This layer is present in thick skin but not in thin skin.

11. **Sebaceous gland** - Produces an accumulation of oily material that is known as a blackhead.
12. **Sweat gland-merocrine** - Perspiration glands with a role in temperature control.
13. **Stratum corneum** - Primarily made of dead/keratinized cells.
