Gamma rays or gamma radiation (symbol γ)

• Penetrating EM radiation arising from the radioactive decay of atomic nuclei.

• Consists of the shortest wavelength and the highest photon energy.

• Ionizing radiation which can kill living cells.

Uses

• They are used to treat malignant tumors in radiotherapy.

• For treatment in the body, high energy photons are sent to reach the target tumors without affecting the surrounding tissue.

• Gamma rays are used in medicine (radiotherapy), industry (sterilization & disinfection), and the nuclear industry.

Dangers

• Shielding against gamma rays is essential because they can cause diseases to skin or blood, eye disorders, and cancers.

• Associated with the hottest and most energetic objects in the universe –
