PS flashcards

  • Carbon dioxide - molecule made up of 1 carbon atom and 2 oxygen (CO2) - reactant of photosynthesis

  • Water - molecule made up of 1 oxygen atom and 2 hydrogen atoms (H2O) - reactant of photosynthesis

  • Sunlight - type of energy that is a reactant in photosynthesis

  • Oxygen molecule - molecule made up of 2 atoms of oxygen (O2) - product of photosynthesis

  • Glucose - type of carbohydrate that is a product of photosynthesis

  • Atoms - smallest units of matter that make up everything (examples - carbon, oxygen, sulfur, iron, hydrogen, nitrogen, lead, etc.)

  • Molecules - groups of atoms bonded together (examples - water, carbon dioxide, glucose, oxygen, cellulose, proteins, amino acids, etc.)

  • Cells - when you put a bunch of organelles together, you make cells

  • Organelles - when you put a bunch of molecules together, you make organelles (examples - chloroplast, mitochondria)

  • Chemical reaction - when the bonds of reactants are broken, atoms are rearranged, and new bonds are formed to create products. Energy is involved with the bonds

  • Reactants - the atoms or molecules going into a chemical reaction

  • Products - the atoms or molecules produced from a chemical reaction

  • Chloroplast - organelle found in plant leaf cells where photosynthesis happens

  • Stomata - tiny holes on the leaves of plants that let gases in and out

  • Chemical energy  - a type of energy that is stored in the bonds of molecules

  • Light energy - type of energy

  • Bonds - things that hold atoms together to make molecules; hold energy

  • Roots - structures in plants that take up water for photosynthesis

  • Leaves - structure in plants where photosynthesis happens

  • Biomass  -the total mass of a living thing when all of the stored water is removed - only the cell materials
