Cell Theory

The cell is the foundation of all life. They perform most of the

chemistry within an organism and make up the structures within the body.

There are three principles that hold true for all cells:

  1. They make up all organisms (one or more cells)

  2. The cell is the basic building block of the structure and function of life

  3. Every cell comes from another existing cell (cells divide to form new cells)

There are 5 contributors to cell theory:

  1. Robert Hooke: Came up with the name cells

  2. Anton Van Leeuwenhoek: Referred to living cells called animalcules (plant & animal) after observing a drop of pond water

  3. Matthias Schleiden: Projected plant cells are made if cells

  4. Theodor Schwann: Determined all animals are made of cells (1st statement of cell theory)

  5. Rudolf Virchow: stated all cells come from preexisting cells(2nd statement of cell theory)→

Many cells→tissue

Many tissues→ organs

Every organ →organism
