Reading research figures - where to begin

1. Read title and legend

2. Axes: types of measurements (categorical, quantitative), labels, units of measurements

3. Legend: describe the figure, clarify abbreviations, acronyms, symbols so that you understand the labels on the figure(s), number of replicates

4. Is there a key? identify what each colour/pattern represents

5. Controls: Identify them and interpret these first.

6. Statistics: Are they present? what do they mean?

7. Be CRITICAL - why are these important in considering the result?
