Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs)
GUI, often pronounced as "gooey," is a visual method for interaction with a computer, where users manipulate visual elements, including icons and windows. The first GUI was developed by Xerox in 1973 for its Alto computer, and it laid the foundation for most modern GUIs, including Microsoft Windows. Key components of a GUI include icons, windows, menus, radio buttons, and checkboxes, typically operated using a pointing device like a mouse or trackball. One major advantage of GUIs is standardization; once a user learns one GUI, they can adapt more easily to others, reducing the overall learning curve.

Desktop Overview
Similar to an actual desk, a computer desktop serves as a storage area for electronic tools and provides easy access to current projects. The desktops on Windows 10 and CentOS 7 demonstrate this concept effectively.
Windows Desktop History
Microsoft's journey began with Windows 3, which introduced multitasking and garnered strong support from developers.
Windows 95 introduced the iconic Start button, which became a staple for years.
Windows 98 was tailored for consumer use while Windows Millennium Edition was the last version based on MS-DOS.

Taskbar Functionality
The taskbar, located at the bottom of the screen, allows users to launch applications and switch between open windows. It contains pinned icons and displays running applications with underlined icons.
Clicking an icon on the taskbar switches to that application.
