Fundamentals of Geography

Geography is defined as the scientific study of the physical characteristics of the Earth. The term originates from two Greek words: "Geo," which means earth (daigdig), and "Graphia" or "Graphien," which means description (paglalarawan). Beyond just a description, the study of geography involves describing the Earth's physical attributes and understanding their implications for human life.

The essential skills developed through the study of Earth's physical characteristics include the ability to describe physical traits and their effects on human living, identifying the locations of famous landmarks across the globe, listing the five themes of geography, and explaining the significance of various landforms and water forms in people's lives.

The Five Themes of Geography

Geography is organized into five major themes that help categorize how we study the world: Location (Lokasyon), Place (Lugar), Region (Rehiyon), Human-Environment Interaction (Interaksyon ng Tao at Kapaligiran), and Movement (Paggalaw).

Location refers to the positioning of places on the Earth's surface. This can be determined using two distinct methods. Absolute Location (Lokasyong Absolute) utilizes the intersection of latitude lines and longitude lines to determine the exact coordinates of a place on the globe. Relative Location (Relatibong Lokasyon) uses surrounding landforms, bodies of water, or man-made structures as reference points to describe where a place is situated.

Place refers to the unique characteristics of a specific area. It is categorized in two ways: the Characteristics of the Location (Katangian ng Kinaroroonan), which include climate, landforms, water forms, and natural resources; and the Characteristics of the People (Katangian ng mga taong naninirahan), which encompass language, religion, culture, population density, and types of government or leadership.

Region describes sections of the world unified by similar physical or cultural characteristics. Examples of regional classifications include East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Western and Central Asia, and North Asia (Siberia). Within a specific country like the Philippines, regions are also used for administrative and geographic organization, such as Region I, NCR, BARMM, and others.

Human-Environment Interaction explores the relationship between humans and the physical characteristics of their location. This theme focuses on how the environment serves as a source for human needs and how people adapt to or change their surroundings.

Movement (Paggalaw) refers to the migration of people from their place of birth to new locations, as well as the movement of goods and natural phenomena. In geography, distance is measured in three ways: Linear distance refers to how far a place is physically; Time distance refers to the duration of travel; and Psychological distance refers to how the distance of a place is perceived or viewed.

The Earth's Physical Structure and Position

The Earth is a vital part of the Solar System. Its specific location in the solar system, particularly its distance from the sun, is the fundamental reason why life can exist on the planet. The physical structure of the Earth is divided into three primary layers: the Crust, which is the hard and rocky outer layer; the Mantle, a layer of extremely hot rock; and the Core, the innermost part of the Earth composed of iron and nickel.

The planet is also divided into four hemispheres: the Northern Hemisphere, Western Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, and Eastern Hemisphere. These divisions help in organizing and navigating the Earth's surface.

The Global Grid and Imaginary Lines

To facilitate location and measurement, the Earth is covered by a grid of imaginary lines. The Equator (Ekwador) is the primary line that divides the globe into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres at 00^{\circ} latitude. Latitude refers to the angular distance between two parallels measured North or South of the Equator.

The Prime Meridian is the line at 00^{\circ} longitude that passes through Greenwich, England. Longitude refers to the angular distance between two meridians, also known as great circles, that run from the North Pole to the South Pole.

Key imaginary lines include the Tropic of Cancer, located at 23.523.5^{\circ} North of the Equator; the Tropic of Capricorn, located at 23.523.5^{\circ} South of the Equator; the Arctic Circle, located at 66.566.5^{\circ} North of the Equator; and the Antarctic Circle, located at 66.566.5^{\circ} South of the Equator. The North Pole and South Pole are situated at 9090^{\circ} latitude.

Climate and Atmospheric Conditions

Climate (Klima) is the long-term state or condition of the atmosphere in a specific region or area. It is a crucial factor in the Earth's ability to sustain life. Different regions experience different climatic conditions based on their geographic location relative to the Equator and other physical factors.

Theories on the Origin of Continents

There are two primary scientific theories explaining the formation and movement of Earth's landmasses. The Tectonic Plate Theory suggests that the Earth's crust is divided into large, thick pieces of land called tectonic plates. The movement of these plates causes changes in the Earth's surface.

The Continental Drift Theory, proposed by Alfred Wegener, posits that all continents were once connected in a single supercontinent called Pangea, which was surrounded by a massive ocean called Panthalassa. Over time, the movement of tectonic plates caused this supercontinent to break apart into the continents we recognize today.

Characteristics of the Seven Continents

Asia is the largest continent, occupying approximately 13\frac{1}{3} of the Earth's total land area. Key landmarks include the Himalayas, Mt. Everest (the highest mountain in the world), Mt. Godwin Austen or K2, and Mt. Fujiyama. Major water forms include the Huang Ho, Yangtze, Ganges, and Mekong rivers, as well as Lake Baikal.

Africa contains the highest number of countries of any continent. It is the world's leading source of diamonds and gold. Notable features include Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Sahara Desert, the Nile River, and the Kalahari Desert.

Europe is the second smallest continent, making up only 6.8%6.8\% of the Earth's total land area. Notable landmarks include Mt. Elbrus, the Volga River, and Mt. Etna.

North America is shaped like a triangle. It features the Appalachian Mountains in the East and the Rocky Mountains in the West. Other significant landmarks include Niagara Falls, Denali, and the Mississippi River.

South America is also triangular but narrows progressively toward the South from the Equator. It is home to the Andes Mountains, Mt. Aconcagua, the Amazon River, and Angel Falls.

Oceania is the smallest continent and is known for its unique animal species. Significant features include Mt. Kosciuszko and the Murray River.

Antarctica is a unique continent entirely covered in ice, with an average ice thickness of 1.2miles1.2\,\text{miles}.
