Hitler’s Foreign Policy

Rise to Power:

  • He felt politicians betrayed the country when signing the TOV

  • He wanted to abandon the disarmament policies and democratic government

Imprisonment/Release:

  • He wrote Mein Kampf during his imprisonment, post-Beer Hall Putsch

  • He gained publicity

  • He comes back out of imprisonment and Germany’s economy was being resolved

Nazi Success:

  • The U.S. great depression had impact worldwide, and Hitler gained back more popularity to fix the economy again due to economic crisis

Foreign Policy:

  • restoring Germany as a power

  • end TOV terms

  • recover Saar and Polish corridor

  • Develop armies

  • form anschluss with Austria

  • German speakers under one gov’t

Attempted Anschluss:

  • Jan 1934: a non-agression policy was signed with Poland for security, assuring their neutrality when Germany invades Czechoslovakia or Austria

  • July 1934: Germany attempts anschluss, Dolfuss is murdered by Austrian nazis, but Mousselini’s intervention lead to unsuccess

  • Jan 1935: Saar is returned to Germany and Hitler uses this as propaganda

Rearmament:

  • March 1935: Hitler brought back conscription (complusory military service) to increase military

  • France, Britain and Italy met to reaffirm Locarno and support Austria’s independence

  • Signed Anglo-German Naval agreement, which limited Germany to an army 35% of the size of Britain’s
