Genetic Variation

What factors would have to exist for a species to be able to change?

Evolution by natural selection

  • Genetic variation which is often due to a chance mutation.

  • Competition; for food, mates, territory, to avoid predation.

  • ‘Survival of the fittest’ the organism that is best adapted to its environment is more likely to survive

  • More likely to  reproduce

  • More likely to pass on the advantageous alleles to the offspring.

Leading to change in the species over time to have advantageous characteristics/traits-  evolution.
