Types of Tissues

Animal Tissues

  • A tissue is a group of cells with similar structure and function working together.
  • Muscular Tissue:
    • Function: Contracts to bring about movement.
  • Glandular Tissue:
    • Function: Contains secretory cells.
    • Action: Produces and secretes substances such as enzymes and hormones.
  • Epithelial Tissue:
    • Function: Covers the outside of the body and internal organs.

Plant Tissues

  • Epidermal Tissues:
    • Function: Cover plant surfaces and protect them.
  • Polysate Mesophyll:
    • Contains lots of chloroplasts.
    • Function: Carries out photosynthesis.
  • Spongy Mesophyll:
    • Contains some chloroplasts for photosynthesis.
    • Has big air spaces and large surface area.
    • Function: Facilitates the diffusion of gases.
  • Xylem and Phloem:
    • Transport tissues in plants.
    • Xylem: Carries water and dissolved minerals from the roots up to the plant.
    • Phloem: Transports dissolved food from the leaves around the plant.
