Kingdoms and Domains
Structural Diversity
- based on morphology
The Three Domains
- Archaea
- prokaryotic, unicellular
- Bacteria
- prokaryotic, unicellular
- Eukarya
- eukaryotic, uni or multicellular
- three-domain system introduced by Carl Woese in 1990
Types of Nutrition
- Autotroph
- auto=by itself
- obtains energy by producing its own food
- includes phototrophs
- uses light energy to manufacture food (photosynthesis)
- Heterotroph
- obtains energy by intaking nutrients from different sources
Two Major Cell Types
- unicellular
- made up of one cell
- multicellular
- made up of more than one cell
- two major cell types are prokaryotic or eukaryotic
Prokaryotic Cells
- smaller, relatively simple compared to eukaryotic
- lack membrane bound nucleus
- DNA is not contained
- circular DNA
- no membrane bound organelles

Eukaryotic Cells
- more complex and 1000x larger than prokaryotic
- membrane bound nucleus
- DNA is contained inside nucleus
- linear DNA
- membrane bound organelles
- mitochondria

Dichotomous Keys
- identification system
- uses many two part choices to narrow down a species
