William Butler Yeats was an Irish Poet who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. He was born June 13, 1865 and died January 28, 1939. He was a driving force in Irish literature and credits Lord Byron, John Keats, William Blake some of the influences on his poetry. His poem “The Second Coming” was written post World War I, when he had been disillusioned by the “efficacy of democratic government” and the anticipated political reconstruction of Europe through totalitarianism rule ( ). This poem in particular emphasizes Yeats’ political fears by alluding to the Second Coming of Christ in the Christian Bible. Yeats’ early poetry drew heavily on Irish myth and folklore and subsequently became more political while still retaining the folklorist traditions of his youth. In examining “The Second Coming” through a historical lens, it is obvious that Yeats, was still in his mythological and esoteric phase of writing while moving into his more politicized work.
