1. ADVERBS (Gli Avverbi)
Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Many Italian adverbs are formed by adding -mente to the feminine form of adjectives.
Formation Rules:
Adjectives ending in -o: Change to feminine (-a), then add -mente
lento → lenta → lentamente (slowly)
veloce → veloce → velocemente (quickly)
Adjectives ending in -e: Just add -mente
facile → facilmente (easily)
difficile → difficilmente (with difficulty)
Adjectives ending in -le/-re: Drop the final -e, then add -mente
particolare → particolar → particolarmente (particularly)
regolare → regolar → regolarmente (regularly)
Common Irregular Adverbs:
bene (well) - from buono
male (badly) - from cattivo
molto (very, a lot)
poco (little, not much)
troppo (too much)
sempre (always)
mai (never)
spesso (often)
presto (early, soon)
tardi (late)
2. ARTICLES - Definite and Indefinite
DEFINITE ARTICLES (the)
Masculine Singular:
il - before most consonants: il ragazzo, il libro
lo - before s + consonant, z, gn, ps, x, y: lo studente, lo zaino
l' - before vowels: l'amico, l'uomo
Masculine Plural:
i - plural of il: i ragazzi, i libri
gli - plural of lo and l': gli studenti, gli amici
Feminine Singular:
la - before consonants: la ragazza, la scuola
l' - before vowels: l'amica, l'università
Feminine Plural:
le - all feminine plurals: le ragazze, le amiche
INDEFINITE ARTICLES (a, an)
Masculine:
un - before most consonants and vowels: un ragazzo, un amico
uno - before s + consonant, z, gn, ps, x, y: uno studente, uno zaino
Feminine:
una - before consonants: una ragazza
un' - before vowels: un'amica
3. IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS WITH AVERE
These expressions use avere (to have) where English uses "to be":
avere ... anni - to be ... years old
Ho venti anni. (I am 20 years old.)
avere fame - to be hungry
Hai fame? (Are you hungry?)
avere sete - to be thirsty
Ho sete! (I'm thirsty!)
avere sonno - to be sleepy
Abbiamo sonno. (We are sleepy.)
avere freddo - to be cold
Hanno freddo. (They are cold.)
avere caldo - to be hot/warm
Ha caldo. (He/She is hot.)
avere paura (di) - to be afraid (of)
Ho paura dei ragni. (I'm afraid of spiders.)
avere voglia di - to feel like, to want
Ho voglia di un caffè. (I feel like having a coffee.)
avere bisogno di - to need
Hai bisogno di aiuto? (Do you need help?)
avere ragione - to be right
Tu hai ragione. (You are right.)
avere torto - to be wrong
Lui ha torto. (He is wrong.)
avere fretta - to be in a hurry
Ho fretta! (I'm in a hurry!)
4. PRESENT TENSE: Regular -ERE Verbs
Endings: -o, -i, -e, -iamo, -ete, -ono
Example: PRENDERE (to take)
io prendo (I take)
tu prendi (you take)
lui/lei prende (he/she takes)
noi prendiamo (we take)
voi prendete (you all take)
loro prendono (they take)
Common -ERE Verbs:
leggere - to read
scrivere - to write
vedere - to see
credere - to believe
vendere - to sell
rispondere - to answer
mettere - to put
vivere - to live
chiudere - to close
perdere - to lose
5. PRESENT TENSE: Regular -IRE Verbs
There are TWO types of -ire verbs:
Type 1: Simple -IRE (endings: -o, -i, -e, -iamo, -ite, -ono)
DORMIRE (to sleep):
io dormo
tu dormi
lui/lei dorme
noi dormiamo
voi dormite
loro dormono
Other Type 1 verbs: aprire (to open), offrire (to offer), partire (to leave), sentire (to hear/feel)
Type 2: -ISC- verbs (add -isc- in all forms except noi and voi)
FINIRE (to finish):
io finisco
tu finisci
lui/lei finisce
noi finiamo
voi finite
loro finiscono
Other -ISC- verbs: capire (to understand), preferire (to prefer), pulire (to clean), spedire (to send), costruire (to build)
6. POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES
Possessive adjectives agree in gender and number with the thing possessed, not the possessor.

7. POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES WITH FAMILY MEMBERS
SPECIAL RULE: With singular, unmodified family members, DROP the article.
With Article (NO):
la mia madre❌
Without Article (YES):
mia madre ✓ (my mother)
tuo padre ✓ (your father)
sua sorella ✓ (his/her sister)
nostro fratello ✓ (our brother)
EXCEPTIONS - Keep the article when:
Family member is plural:
i miei fratelli (my brothers)
le tue sorelle (your sisters)
Family member is modified (with adjective):
la mia cara madre (my dear mother)
il mio fratello maggiore (my older brother)
Using "loro" (their):
il loro padre (their father) - always keeps article
Affectionate/diminutive forms:
la mia mamma (my mom)
il mio papà (my dad)
la mia sorellina (my little sister)
With "nonno/nonna" (grandpa/grandma):
Some speakers drop it: mio nonno
Others keep it: il mio nonno (both acceptable)
8. FAMILY VOCABULARY (La Famiglia)
Immediate Family:

la madre / mamma - mother / mom
i genitori - parents
il figlio - son
la figlia - daughter
i figli - children/sons
il fratello - brother
la sorella - sister

9. ADJECTIVES: Agreement and Position
AGREEMENT:
Adjectives must agree in gender and number with the noun they modify.
Regular Patterns:

buono (good), cattivo (bad)
giovane (young), vecchio (old)
grande (big), piccolo (small)
nuovo (new), vecchio (old)

una bella casa (a beautiful house)

Note: Some adjectives change meaning based on position:
un grande uomo (a great man) vs. un uomo grande (a big man)
un vecchio amico (an old/longtime friend) vs. un amico vecchio (an elderly friend)
10. VOLERE (to want) - Irregular Verb
Conjugation:
io voglio (I want)
tu vuoi (you want)
lui/lei vuole (he/she wants)
noi vogliamo (we want)
voi volete (you all want)
loro vogliono (they want)
Usage:
Voglio un caffè. (I want a coffee.)
Vuoi venire? (Do you want to come?)
Vogliamo studiare. (We want to study.)
With infinitives:
Voglio mangiare. (I want to eat.)
Vuole partire. (He/She wants to leave.)
11. POTERE (to be able to, can, may) - Irregular Verb
Conjugation:
io posso (I can)
tu puoi (you can)
lui/lei può (he/she can)
noi possiamo (we can)
voi potete (you all can)
loro possono (they can)
Usage:
Posso aiutarti? (Can I help you?)
Puoi parlare italiano? (Can you speak Italian?)
Possiamo andare al cinema. (We can go to the movies.)
12. DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES
QUESTO (this/these) - near the speaker
Singular:
questo (m.) - questo libro (this book)
questa (f.) - questa casa (this house)
quest' - before vowels: quest'anno (this year)
Plural:
questi (m.) - questi libri (these books)
queste (f.) - queste case (these houses)
QUELLO (that/those) - far from the speaker
Quello changes like the definite article:
