Cells and Complexes
Definition of Complex: Refers to structures within cells that do not have a membrane surrounding them.
Nucleus as a Complex: The nucleus is considered a complex because it houses ribosomal subunits which are crucial for protein synthesis.
Sorting and Distribution of Proteins
Protein Sorting: Responsible for distributing proteins to the correct locations within the cell.
Protein Destination Examples:
Some proteins are directed to lysosomes.
Others are intended to be secreted outside the cell.
Glycosylation Process
What is Glycosylation?: This process involves tagging proteins with carbohydrates to direct their movement and function in the cell.
Tagging Molecule: The question of which molecule is used for tagging during glycosylation typically points to carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates Overview
Monosaccharides: Made up of one monomer (single sugar unit).
Disaccharides: Composed of two monomers (two sugar units).
Oligosaccharides: Contain several (a few) monomers.
Polysaccharides: Consist of many sugar units (long chains).
Health Monitoring
Glucose Metabolism: To assess how well glucose is metabolized in the body, blood glucose levels are measured, not blood glucose phosphate.
Importance of Blood Tests: Regular monitoring of blood glucose can provide important health insights.
