Overview of the Present Progressive

  • Definition: The present progressive (or present continuous) expresses actions happening right now, at the moment of speaking.
  • Perífrasis Verbal: In Spanish, this is considered a "verb phrase" consisting of the auxiliary verb Estar and a present participle.
  • Component Distinction: The present participle is the verb form ending in "-ing" (English) or "-ando/-iendo" (Spanish). The present progressive is the full tense using a form of "to be" plus that participle.

Conjugating the Auxiliary Verb Estar

To form the present progressive, you must first conjugate Estar in the present tense to match the subject:

  • Yo: estoy
  • Tú: estás
  • Él / Ella / Usted: está
  • Nosotros: estamos
  • Vosotros: estáis
  • Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes: están

Forming Regular Present Participles

To create the participle, start with the infinitive, drop the ending, and add the new suffix:

  • −AR-AR Verbs: Add -ando (e.g., hablar $\rightarrow$ hablando).
  • −ER-ER Verbs: Add -iendo (e.g., comer $\rightarrow$ comiendo).
  • −IR-IR Verbs: Add -iendo (e.g., vivir $\rightarrow$ viviendo).

Irregular Present Participles

Certain verbs undergo stem changes or orthographic shifts in their participle form:
