Hemodialysis Treatment and Technician Roles
Kidney Failure and Treatment Options
Kidney failure requires treatment to replace kidney function, including dialysis and transplant options.
Hemodialysis Overview
Hemodialysis (HD):
Involves a vascular access created surgically.
Blood circulates through a dialyzer (artificial kidney) that filters out wastes and excess water.
Operates in an extracorporeal (outside the body) closed loop.
Dialyzer Functionality
Contains hollow fiber membranes.
Waste and water exit the blood into a cleansing fluid called dialysate.
Used dialysate, containing wastes, is disposed of down a drain.
Treatment Protocol
Administered by a nephrologist who prescribes treatment details (time, blood and dialysate flow rates).
Safety checks and alarms on machines ensure proper treatment and patient monitoring.
More than 85% of U.S. dialysis patients receive standard in-center HD (three times a week, approx. 4 hours each).
In-center self-care option available for greater patient involvement in care.
Technician Responsibilities
Technicians assist in opening and operating clinics, conducting safety checks, and managing supplies.
Responsibilities include:
Setting up and cleaning dialysis machines.
Taking vital signs and monitoring patient condition.
Explaining procedures to patients and addressing their needs during treatment.
Ensuring safe removal of needles post-treatment and monitoring for any complications.
