Performance and Result-Based Golf Practice Methodology

Transitioning from Technical to Performance Practice

Performance practice shifts the focus from technical swing mechanics to the reaction and feel of the golf shot. While technical practice involves drills and training stations, performance practice requires removing training aids to develop a repetitive, subconscious ball flight. This phase should always follow technical work, ensuring the golfer transitions from a developmental mindset to a reactive state similar to actual play on the golf course.

Implementing Zone-Based Result Drills

This practice method utilizes piles of 1010 balls to target specific zones rather than just a pin. For a seven iron hit with a draw, the player establishes a target zone approximately 2020 to 2525 feet to the right of the target. Each shot must include a full pre-shot routine—walking in, aligning, taking a setup, and performing waggles—while focusing on the visual start line of the ball to build consistency and confidence.

Measuring Performance with the Ball Striking Test

Quantitative progress is tracked through the ball striking test, which evaluates 5050 shots: 1010 nine irons, 1010 sevens, 1010 five irons, 1010 hybrids, and 1010 drivers. Success is measured by how many shots land within the established zone. A score of 3535 out of 5050 is considered tour level, while developmental scores might start at 2222 out of 5050 and improve to 2727 out of 5050 over time. A standard hour of practice should split into 4040 minutes of technical drills and 2020 minutes of performance-based routine work.

Consistency through Tempo and Routine

Consistent tempo is critical for performance under pressure. Resources like Mike Boyko and his "tempo in motion" tracks can help stabilize a player's rhythm, preventing the tendency to get "quick" or nervous. By practicing with a repetitive routine and a measured tempo, golfers develop habits that discourage a "two-way miss" and allow them to trust what they have trained once they are on the golf course.
