Independent group contingency: Provides rewards to the members of the group who meet a specific criterion.
Independent group contingency example: Each student who makes 90% or above (same criteria, same target behavior) receives an A (same reinforcer)

dependent group contingency: offers a reward to an entire group based upon the behavior or performance of one or more of its members.
dependent group contingency example: If John accomplishes his goal of staying in his seat, the entire class would earn a field trip.

Interdependent Group Contingencies: Reward systems in which all children earn token reinforcers for engaging in target behaviors and work together toward a group goal. When the group has collectively earned enough tokens to reach the group goal, they then trade their tokens in for a group-wide terminal reinforcer.
Interdependent group contingency example: A father of three wants to encourage his children to complete household chores. He may assign one task to each child to be completed before dinner is served.

What is the difference between an independent and dependent group contingency?: An independent group contingency is presented to all but earned only by those who meet the criterion. On the other hand, dependent group contingencies rewards the whole group based on the performance of either an individual or collection of individuals within the group.
