The Crucible Vocabulary

1. Trepidation- a feeling of fear or agitation about something that may happen.

2. Innate- inborn; natural/ originating in the mind.

3. Calumny- the making of false and defamatory statements about someone in order to damage their reputation; slander.

4. Providence- the protective care of God or of nature as a spiritual power.

5. Corroborate- confirm or give support to (a statement, theory, or finding).

6. Intimations- an indication or hint.

7. Formidable- inspiring fear or respect through being impressively large, powerful, intense, or capable.

8. Subtle- making use of clever and indirect methods to achieve something.

9. Contention- heated disagreement

10. Prodigious- remarkably or impressively great in extent, size, or degree.

11. Poppet- a small figure of a human being used in sorcery and witchcraft (doll/puppet). 

12. Lechery- excessive or offensive sexual desire; lustfulness (adultery/ cheating on someone). 

13. Dissembling- conceal one's true motives, feelings, or beliefs.

14. Titillated- stimulate or excite (someone)

15. Deference- humble submission and respect.

16. Pallor- an unhealthy pale appearance.

17. Defamation- the action of damaging the good reputation of someone; slander or libel.

18. Ameliorate- make (something bad or unsatisfactory) better.

19. Theology- the study of the nature of God and religious belief.

20. Fathom- understand (a difficult problem or an enigmatic person) after much thought.

21. Indictment- a formal charge or accusation of a serious crime.

22. Abomination- a thing that causes disgust or hatred.

23. Lascivious- (of a person, manner, or gesture) feeling or revealing an overt and often offensive sexual desire.

24. Ascertain- find (something) out for certain; make sure of.

25. Paradox- a logically self-contradictory statement or a statement that runs contrary to one's expectation.

26. Crucible- a ceramic or metal container in which metals or other substances may be melted or subjected to very high temperatures.

27. Predilection- a preference or special liking for something; a bias in favor of something.

28. Citadel- a fortress, typically on high ground, protecting or dominating a city.

29. Ingratiate- bring oneself into favor with someone by flattering or trying to please them.

30. Vindictive- having or showing a strong or unreasonable desire for revenge.

31. Contentious- causing or likely to cause an argument; controversial.

32. Immaculate- (especially of a person or their clothes) perfectly clean, neat, or tidy.

33. Deposition- the process of giving sworn evidence.

34. Effrontery- insolent or impertinent behavior

35. Placidly- Something done in a calm manner

36. Sublime- of such excellence, grandeur, or beauty as to inspire great admiration or awe.

37. Qualm- an uneasy feeling of doubt, worry, or fear, especially about one's own conduct; a misgiving.

38. Perjury- the offense of willfully telling an untruth in a court after having taken an oath or affirmation.

39. Beguile- charm or enchant (someone), sometimes in a deceptive way.

40. Gaunt- (of a person) lean and haggard, especially because of suffering, hunger, or age.

41. Unperturbed- not perturbed or concerned.

42. Imperceptible- impossible to perceive.

43. Gibbet- an upright post with an arm on which the bodies of executed criminals were left hanging as a warning or deterrent to others.

44. Excommunication- the action of officially excluding someone from participation in the sacraments and services of the Christian Church.

45. Adamant- refusing to be persuaded or to change one's mind.

46. Faltering- moving unsteadily or hesitantly.

47. Incredulously- in a manner indicating disbelief.

48. Callously- in a way that shows an insensitive and cruel disregard for others; unfeelingly.

49. Purged- rid (someone or something) of an unwanted quality, condition, or feeling.

50. Daft- silly; foolish.

51. Vile- extremely unpleasant.

52. Agape- Christian love, especially as distinct from erotic love or emotional affection.

53. Reprieve- cancel or postpone the punishment of (someone, especially someone condemned to death).

54. Penitence- the action of feeling or showing sorrow and regret for having done wrong; repentance.

55. Propitiation- the action of propitiating or appeasing a god, spirit, or person.
