PROTOSTOMES

Overview of Protostomes

  • Protostomes are a major group of animals characterized by distinctive developmental processes.

  • Includes two main clades: Lophotrochozoa and Ecdysozoa.

  • Lophotrochozoa includes:

    • Rotifera (Rotifers)

  • Ecdysozoa includes:

    • Diploblastic animals have two layers (ectoderm, endoderm).

    • Protostomes: Coelom forms by splitting (schizocoelous).

Reproduction

  • Primarily reproduce asexually through parthenogenesis.
