College Bound?

Do you know that you're college-bound? Do you already feel a calling for a specific profession? Have you already set goals for your life? Are you still uncertain? Here are some things to think about: What are your talents? What are your interests? Are you someone who likes paperwork and being in an office, or are you happier outside working with your hands? These are all things you will need to think about when planning your life and education after high school. The trick is to find the right place and program to help you become all God has meant for you to be.

First of all, decisions regarding future plans need to be given prayerful consideration at every step. Find people who can give you wise counsel and help you reach your goals for yourself. If you think you're college-bound, you need to do all you can to prepare as early as possible. The initial step here is to set goals and see what is necessary to reach them. It's good to have things you want to accomplish, but if you don’t DO something to see it happen, it won't. If you want to attend the university of your choice, what will it take to get there? This is where you should begin to walk through all the necessary steps to make your goal a reality.

Are you one of those students who know they want to go to college but have NO idea what to study? Are there so many exciting options out there that you can't decide? That's not necessarily a bad thing. Many people don't find out what they want to be when they grow up until they're grown up. Talk to enough people, and you will find that a significant portion of the population is now doing things they never thought of when they were in high school. The key here is to know yourself and to realize that God made each of us with a unique combination of interests, talents, and skills that are meant to contribute in a particular way to God's plan for the world.

If you are already planning for college and know what you'd like to study, GREAT! You are ahead of most students at this point in their education. If you don't know, GREAT! You have a world to explore to find out what God has for you. If you don't think you’re cut out for college, GREAT! God has provided us all with unique abilities that He plans to use to advance the Kingdom. We can't all be preachers, teachers, doctors, or lawyers. God needs carpenters, plumbers, truck drivers, mechanics, brick masons, and every other trade or profession to reach the world for Christ! The key is to understand God's plan for your life and to prepare yourself for the role you are to play in the world.

With that said, at the end of this lesson you will take a Career Interest Test and reflect on the results to see if you are pursuing what you think you should pursue or to help get you thinking in particular directions. It's not going to be hard; you just need to be honest with yourself so that you get honest results. It’s vital, no matter where you go after high school, to be as educated as you can possibly be and to continue to learn throughout your lifetime.
