Blood Donation and Transfusion

  • Definitions:     * Donor: A healthy person who gives blood.     * Recipient: A sick person or someone deficient in blood who receives blood.     * Blood Transfusion: The process of transferring blood from a donor to a recipient to prevent death due to injury, severe sickness, or surgery loss.
  • Blood Group Compatibility:     * Agglutination: A reaction where red blood cells stick together when incompatible blood groups are mixed, caused by antigens reacting with complementary antibodies.     * Agglutins: These clumps can block capillaries and larger blood vessels.
  • Compatibility Rules:     * Blood containing a specific antigen must not mix with blood containing the matching antibody.     * Group OO: Known as the Universal Donor because it has no antigens; however, it contains both antibodies, so it can only receive group OO blood.     * Group ABAB: Known as the Universal Recipient because it has no antibodies and can receive any blood type.

Blood Group Classification (Table 5.4)

  • Group AA: Antigen AA on red blood cells; Antibody BB in plasma.
  • Group BB: Antigen BB on red blood cells; Antibody AA in plasma.
  • Group ABAB: Antigens AA and BB on red blood cells; no antibodies in plasma.
  • Group OO: No antigens on red blood cells; Antibodies AA and BB in plasma.

The Lymphatic System

  • Definition: A collection of vessels that returns proteins and fluid to the circulatory system from the extracellular fluid (ECF).
  • Lymph: A fluid similar to blood plasma transported through open-ended vessels.
  • Mechanism: A low-pressure system driven by slow muscle contractions; vessels use flap-like valves to prevent backflow.
  • Circulation Path: Lymph returns to the venous system via the right and left subclavian veins.
  • Lymph Nodes: Enlargements in lymph channels that store lymphocytes and use phagocytosis to filter bacteria, damaged cells, and debris.

Functions and Components of the Lymphatic System

  • Key Functions:     * Returns excess interstitial fluid to the blood.     * Absorption of Fats: Lacteals absorb fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the digestive system. The resulting milky fluid is called chyle.     * Defense: Lymphatic organs and nodes filter microorganisms and use lymphocytes to destroy invading organisms.
  • System Components:     * Fluid (lymph).     * Transport vessels.     * Organs/Nodes: Including the Thymus, Spleen, Thoracic duct, Right lymphatic duct, Bone marrow, and Appendix.
