How are fossils form

  1. When animals or plants the soft part decay
  2. The dead animals leave behind their harder parts like skeletons and shells and the dead plants leave their impressions
  3. Slowly the remains are replaced with minerals and become fossils

  • If fresh fish fossils are found in an area the surrounding area is likely to be a river
  • Trilobites exists 500 to 600 million years ago
  • The oldest crab fossils are about 470 million years old and Horseshoe crabs are still existing today
  • The oldest fossils of Archaeopteryx are about 150 million years ago
