Mental Imagery and Concepts
Cognition (Thinking): Mental activity that occurs in the brain when processing information. Processing includes organizing, understanding, and communicating information to others.
Mental Images: Mental representations that stand for objects or events and have a picture-like quality.
In Kosslyn's 1978 study, participants were instructed to push a button when they imagined moving from one location on a fictional island to another. Participants took longer times to complete the mental task when the locations on the image were located farther apart.

Concepts: Ideas that represent a class or category of objects, events, or activities.
Formal Concepts: Concepts defined by specific rules or explicit features.
Natural Concepts: Concepts formed as a result of real-world experiences (e.g., a platypus represents a "fuzzy" natural concept).
Prototypes: Concepts that closely match the defining characteristics of a category. Prototypes develop according to the specific exposure and experience a person has with objects in that category.
Problem Solving, Decision Making, and Creativity
Problem Solving: Process that occurs when a goal must be reached by thinking and behaving in specific ways.
Decision Making: Identifying, evaluating, and choosing between available alternatives.
Problem-Solving Methods:
Trial and Error (Mechanical Solution): Method in which one possible solution after another is tested until a successful outcome is found.
Algorithms: Very specific, step-by-step procedures for solving certain types of problems. Algorithms will always result in a correct solution if one exists (e.g., mathematical formulas).
Heuristics: Educated guesses based on prior experiences that help narrow down possible solutions for a problem, commonly called a "rule of thumb."
Types include representative heuristic, availability heuristic, working backward, and establishing subgoals.
Insight: Sudden perception of a solution to a problem ("Aha!" moment), often occurring when a problem is recognized as similar to a previously solved scenario.
Barriers to Problem Solving:
Functional Fixedness: A cognitive block to problem solving that comes from thinking about objects only in terms of their typical or traditional functions.


Mental Set: The tendency for people to persist in using problem-solving patterns that have worked successfully for them in the past.


Confirmation Bias: The tendency to search for evidence that fits one's beliefs while actively ignoring or disregarding evidence that does not fit those beliefs.
Creativity: The process of solving problems by combining ideas or behavior in new ways.
Convergent Thinking: Thinking process in which a problem is seen as having only one answer, and all lines of thinking lead to that single answer using logical steps and previous knowledge.
Divergent Thinking: Creative process where a person starts from one point and generates many different ideas or possibilities.
Methods for Stimulating Divergent Thinking:
Brainstorming: Generating as many ideas as possible in a short period without judging each idea's merits until all ideas are recorded.

* **Keeping a Journal**: Carrying a journal or audio recorder to log ideas and thoughts immediately as they occur.
* **Freewriting**: Writing down or recording everything that comes to mind about a topic without revising or proofreading until all information is logged, then organizing it later.

* **Mind or Subject Mapping**: Starting with a central idea and drawing a visual map with lines connecting to related sub-concepts.
Theories of Intelligence
Intelligence: The overall ability to learn from one's experiences, acquire knowledge, and use resources effectively in adapting to new situations or solving problems.
Spearman's Theory:
factor: General intelligence, reflecting the overall ability to reason and solve problems.
factor: Specific intelligence, reflecting superior ability in specialized areas.
Gardner's Multiple Intelligences: Suggests reason, logic, and knowledge are separate aspects of intelligence alongside several distinct abilities (originally seven, expanded to nine):
Verbal/Linguistic: Ability to use language effectively (e.g., writers, speakers).

Musical: Ability to compose and/or perform music (e.g., musicians, including those who perform/compose without reading notation).
Logical/Mathematical: Ability to think logically and solve mathematical problems (e.g., scientists, engineers).

Visual/Spatial: Ability to comprehend spatial orientations of objects (e.g., pilots, astronauts, artists, navigators).
Movement: Ability to control physical body motions (e.g., dancers, athletes).

Interpersonal: Sensitivity to others and understanding of human motivations (e.g., psychologists, managers).

Intrapersonal: Understanding of one's own internal emotions and how they guide behavior.
Naturalist: Ability to recognize pattern structures found in nature (e.g., farmers, landscapers, biologists, botanists).

Existentialist (Candidate Intelligence): Ability to conceptualize the "big picture" of human existence by addressing deep philosophical questions regarding life, death, and reality.
Sternberg's Triarchic Theory: Posits three distinct forms of intelligence:
Analytical Intelligence: The capacity to break down problems into component parts for analytical problem solving.
Creative Intelligence: The capacity to cope with novel concepts and formulate innovative solutions.
Practical Intelligence: The capacity to apply information pragmatically to navigate daily life successfully ("street smarts").
Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) Theory:
Crystallized Intelligence (): Accumulated acquired knowledge and skills.
Fluid Intelligence (): Problem-solving ability and cognitive adaptability in novel situations.

Parieto-Frontal Integration Theory (P-FIT): Proposes that frontal and parietal brain regions play the predominant roles in intelligence, supported by the posterior cingulate cortex, insular cortex, and specific subcortical structures.
Measuring Intelligence and Test Construction
Intelligence Quotient (IQ): A score derived by dividing an individual's mental age by their chronological age, multiplied by 100:
Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales: Yield an overall IQ score that allows performance comparison across different age groups.
Wechsler Intelligence Tests: Provide separate verbal and performance scores alongside a full-scale composite IQ score.




Evaluating Test Quality:
Reliability: The consistency of a test in producing identical scores when administered repeatedly to the same individuals.
Validity: The degree to which an assessment tool accurate measures what it was constructed to measure.

Intellectual Disability (Intellectual Developmental Disorder):
Characterized by an IQ score falling below 70 and severe deficits in adaptive behavior relative to chronological age benchmarks.
Ranges from mild to profound. Etiology includes environmental deprivation, genetic/chromosomal abnormalities, maternal alcohol use, nutritional deficits, and environmental toxins.
Giftedness:
Defined as occupying the upper 2% of the general population curve, typically characterized by an IQ score of 130 or higher.
Terman's classic longitudinal study followed gifted children ("Termites") into adulthood, proving they generally achieved success, though the study faced criticism for researcher bias and intervention.
Emotional Intelligence: The capacity to perceive, manage, and regulate personal emotions, maintain self-motivation, display empathy, and execute social skills efficiently.
Heritability and Environment:
Twin and adoption studies demonstrate stronger IQ score correlations as genetic overlap increases.

Levels of Language Analysis:

Morphes: Smallest units of meaning within a language.
Syntax: Rules governing phrase and word order to create grammatically standard sentences.
Semantics: Rules designated for determining the explicit meaning of words and sentences.

Language Development Stages:
Child-Directed Speech: High-pitched, rhythmic, repetitious communication used by adults with infants.
1. Cooing (~2 months): Infant produces vowel-like sounds.
