Paradox Notes

1. Grandfather Paradox
  • Statement: If you travel back in time and kill your grandfather before he has children, you would never be born. But if you were never born, you couldn't travel back to kill him.

  • Type: Temporal / Logical

  • Example: A time traveler prevents their own existence by altering the past.

2. Achilles and the Tortoise
  • Statement: In a race, the quick runner can never overtake the slow runner, as they must first reach the point where the slow runner started, by which time the slow runner has moved further ahead.

  • Type: Mathematical / Zeno's Paradox

  • Example: Achilles covers 1/21/2 the distance, then 1/41/4, then 1/81/8, infinitely approaching but never reaching the tortoise.

3. Ship of Theseus
  • Statement: If every component of an object is replaced over time, is it still the same object?

  • Type: Metaphysical / Identity

  • Example: Replacing every plank of a wooden boat until none of the original wood remains.

4. Sorites Paradox
  • Statement: If you remove one grain of sand from a heap, it is still a heap. If you continue, at what point does it cease to be a heap?

  • Type: Semantic / Vagueness

  • Example: Identifying the exact number of hairs lost that makes a person 'bald'.

5. Barbershop Paradox
  • Statement: A barber shaves all those, and those only, who do not shave themselves. Does the barber shave himself?

  • Type: Logical / Set Theory

  • Example: If he shaves himself, he shouldn't; if he doesn't, he should.

6. Catch-22
  • Statement: A dilemma where the victim cannot escape because of contradictory rules.

  • Type: Logical / Situational

  • Example: You need experience to get a job, but you need a job to get experience.

7. Fermi Paradox
  • Statement: Given the high probability of extraterrestrial life, why haven't we seen any evidence of it yet?

  • Type: Scientific / Cosmological

  • Example: The contradiction between the vastness of the universe and the lack of alien contact.

8. Opposite Day Paradox
  • Statement: If today is 'Opposite Day,' saying it is Opposite Day would mean it actually isn't.

  • Type: Linguistic / Logical

  • Example: Declaring 'I am lying' on Opposite Day.

9. Simpson's Paradox
  • Statement: A trend appears in several groups of data but disappears or reverses when these groups are combined.

  • Type: Statistical

  • Example: University admission rates appearing higher for men in individual departments but higher for women overall.

10. Tolerance Paradox
  • Statement: If a society is tolerant without limit, its ability to be tolerant will eventually be seized or destroyed by the intolerant.

  • Type: Social / Philosophical

  • Example: A democracy allowing a party to win that intends to abolish democracy.

11. Bootstrap Paradox
  • Statement: An object or piece of information sent back in time originates from the future, creating a loop with no clear origin.

  • Type: Temporal / Causal Loop

  • Example: A traveler gives Shakespeare his own plays to publish; who actually wrote them?

12. Stockdale Paradox
  • Statement: You must retain faith that you will prevail in the end, while simultaneously confronting the most brutal facts of your current reality.

  • Type: Psychological

  • Example: Prisoners of war who survived by being realistic rather than overly optimistic.

13. Jevons Paradox
  • Statement: Technological progress that increases the efficiency of a resource often leads to an increase in the consumption of that resource.

  • Type: Economic

  • Example: More fuel-efficient cars leading people to drive significantly more miles.

14. Olbers' Paradox
  • Statement: If the universe is static and infinite, the night sky should be entirely bright, filled with stars everywhere.

  • Type: Cosmological

  • Example: The darkness of night contradicts an infinite, unchanging universe.

15. Paradox of Thrift
  • Statement: Individual saving during an economic recession can lead to a fall in aggregate demand and, hence, a decrease in total saving.

  • Type: Economic

  • Example: Everyone saves money at once, businesses fail, and everyone's income drops.

16. Unexpected Hanging Paradox
  • Statement: A judge tells a prisoner he will be hanged on a surprise weekday next week. The prisoner logically argues it can't happen on any day, yet it does.

  • Type: Epistemic / Logical

  • Example: Predicting the 'surprise' makes it no longer a surprise, leading to flawed logic.

17. Value Paradox
  • Statement: Why is water, which is essential for life, so cheap, while diamonds, which are useless for survival, are so expensive?

  • Type: Economic

  • Example: The difference between use-value and exchange-value.

18. Pinocchio Paradox
  • Statement: What happens if Pinocchio says 'My nose will grow now'?

  • Type: Linguistic / Logical

  • Example: If he is lying, it grows (making it true); if it grows, he wasn't lying.

19. Hedonism Paradox
  • Statement: If you pursue happiness directly, you are less likely to find it; happiness is usually a side effect of other activities.

  • Type: Ethical / Philosophical

  • Example: Searching for 'pleasure' itself often leads to boredom or frustration.

20. Crocodile Paradox
  • Statement: A crocodile steals a child and promises to return him if the father guesses correctly whether he will return him. What if the father says 'You will not return him'?

  • Type: Logical / Self-referential

  • Example: Returning the child would make the guess wrong, but keeping him makes the guess right.

21. Sword and Shield Paradox
  • Statement: What happens when an unstoppable force (the sword that pierces anything) hits an immovable object (the shield that cannot be pierced)?

  • Type: Logical / Conflict

  • Example: A contradiction arising from two absolute properties.

22. Dichotomy Paradox
  • Statement: To travel a distance, you must first cover half the distance, then half of the remaining distance, and so on, implying you can never start.

  • Type: Mathematical / Zeno's Paradox

  • Example: Moving from 00 to 11 requires passing through an infinite number of points.

23. Fletcher Paradox (Arrow Paradox)
  • Statement: For an arrow to be in motion, it must continually change the position it occupies. At any single instant, it is at rest; if it is at rest at every instant, it never moves.

  • Type: Mathematical / Zeno's Paradox

  • Example: A sequence of 'still' moments adding up to movement.

24. Grand Hotel Paradox
  • Statement: A hotel with infinite rooms is full, yet it can still accommodate more guests by shifting every current guest from room nn to room n+1n+1.

  • Type: Mathematical / Infinite

  • Example: Accommodating an infinite busload of guests in a full hotel.

25. Card Paradox
  • Statement: A card has 'The sentence on the other side is true' on one side and 'The sentence on the other side is false' on the other.

  • Type: Logical / Self-referential

  • Example: Assessing side A leads to a contradiction on side B.

26. Liar Paradox
  • Statement: 'This sentence is false.'

  • Type: Logical / Self-referential

  • Example: If it's true, it's false; if it's false, it's true.

27. Grain of Millet Paradox
  • Statement: If a bushel of millet makes a sound when it falls, each individual grain must make a sound; if a grain makes no sound, why does the bushel?

  • Type: Perception / Zeno's Paradox

  • Example: The threshold where small, unnoticeable sounds become a noticeable sound.

28. Boltzmann Brain
  • Statement: It is statistically more likely for a single brain to spontaneously form in a vacuum with false memories than for the entire universe to have evolved.

  • Type: Physical / Cosmological

  • Example: You might be a brain in space right now imagining this list.

29. Paradox of Enrichment
  • Statement: Increasing the food supply to an ecosystem can cause the predator-prey balance to destabilize, leading to extinction.

  • Type: Biological / Ecological

  • Example: Adding nutrients to a pond causes an algae bloom that kills the fish.

30. Service Recovery Paradox
  • Statement: A customer may think more highly of a company after a service failure is corrected than they would have if no failure had occurred.

  • Type: Marketing / Psychological

  • Example: Loving a restaurant more because they handled a wrong order perfectly.

31. Stability-Instability Paradox
  • Statement: When two countries have nuclear weapons (stability), they are more likely to engage in small-scale conventional wars (instability) because they know neither will use nukes.

  • Type: Political / International Relations

  • Example: Proxy wars during the Cold War.

32. Ironic Process Theory
  • Statement: Deliberate attempts to suppress certain thoughts makes them more likely to surface.

  • Type: Psychological

  • Example: Trying not to think of a white bear usually makes you think of it more.

33. Paradox of Choice
  • Statement: While some choice is good, having too many options leads to anxiety and a decreased ability to make any decision at all.

  • Type: Psychological / Economic

  • Example: Feeling overwhelmed by 50 types of jam at the grocery store.

34. Birthday Paradox
  • Statement: In a group of just 2323 people, there is a 50%50\% chance that two of them share the same birthday.

  • Type: Probabilistic

  • Example: The counter-intuitive probability of matching pairs in small groups.

35. Schrodinger's Cat
  • Statement: A cat in a box with a quantum trigger is simultaneously dead and alive until the box is opened and the state is observed.

  • Type: Quantum / Scientific

  • Example: Quantum superposition applied to macroscopic objects.

36. Twin Paradox
  • Statement: One twin travels to space at light speed and returns to find they have aged less than the twin who stayed on Earth.

  • Type: Relativistic / Physical

  • Example: Time dilation resulting from high-velocity travel.

37. Friendship Paradox
  • Statement: On average, most people have fewer friends than their friends have.

  • Type: Social / Statistical

  • Example: Popular people are more likely to be in your friend group, skewing the average upward.

38. Raven Paradox
  • Statement: Observing a green apple provides evidence for the statement 'All ravens are black' because it confirms 'All non-black things are non-ravens.'

  • Type: Epistemic / Inductive

  • Example: Logically equivalent statements being supported by irrelevant observations.

39. Temperature Paradox
  • Statement: If 'the temperature is 9090' and 'the temperature is rising', then '9090 is rising'.

  • Type: Linguistic / Logical

  • Example: Confusing the attribute of an object with the object itself.

40. Interesting Number Paradox
  • Statement: If there were uninteresting numbers, there would be a smallest uninteresting number. But being the 'smallest uninteresting number' makes it interesting.

  • Type: Metamathematical

  • Example: Every number is interesting by virtue of being unique or the 'first' of a kind.

41. Irresistible Force Paradox
  • Statement: Similar to the Sword and Shield; what happens when an object that cannot be stopped hits an object that cannot be moved?

  • Type: Physical / Logical

  • Example: Logic dictates that if an irresistible force exists, an immovable object cannot (and vice-versa).

42. Lottery Paradox
  • Statement: It is rational to believe each individual ticket will lose, but irrational to believe all tickets will lose, even though the set of 'all tickets' is made only of individual losers.

  • Type: Epistemic / Probabilistic

  • Example: Believing you won't win while knowing someone must win.

43. Preparedness Paradox
  • Statement: The more successful a preventative measure is, the less necessary it appears to have been in hindsight.

  • Type: Public Health / Risk

  • Example: Investing in pandemic prep so well that when no pandemic happens, people call the spending a waste.
