Slide 3: My Journey to ARA

My journey to ARA has been shaped by many influences, but the most significant one is my mother. She raised us as a single parent and came from a farming background where education wasn’t always a priority. Despite these challenges, she showed incredible strength and resilience, always helping others in need. Her passion for caring for people and making a difference has inspired me to follow a similar path.

Another important influence has been my 10+ years of experience in aged care. This work has allowed me to witness the profound impact that kindness and compassion can have on someone's life. It has given me a deep sense of fulfillment, knowing that I can make a positive difference in the lives of others. This experience has strengthened my desire to continue learning and to develop the skills necessary to provide even better care.

Slide 4: Career Path

I chose my career path because it allows me to continue helping people and to grow professionally. Through the Careers NZ website, I’ve learned about the key skills needed in this field, such as good communication, patience, kindness, and cultural awareness. My experience in aged care and my Pacifica roots have already helped me develop these important skills. I’ve worked with people from many different backgrounds, and this has taught me the importance of empathy and understanding when providing care.

However, I also recognize that I need to work on other areas, such as problem-solving, time management, and organization. To improve these skills, I plan to stay organized by using tools like a whiteboard to track my tasks and setting clear goals. I also plan to use alarms to remind me of important tasks. With more practice and hands-on experience, I’m confident I can build these skills and become better at managing my responsibilities.

Slide 5: Alternative Career – Medical Imaging

If my first choice doesn’t work out, I’m also considering a career in medical imaging. This field allows professionals to use technology to assist in diagnosing and treating patients. According to the Careers NZ website, medical imaging requires skills like attention to detail, technical knowledge, and the ability to make decisions. While I’ve gained experience in aged care that has helped me develop patience and communication, I know I’ll need to improve my technical skills and decision-making abilities to succeed in this field. I plan to focus on learning more about the technology and gaining hands-on experience to help me become more confident in this area.

Slide 6: Professional Advice

A piece of advice I’ve received from Amy Lee, a professional in the healthcare field with over 9 years of experience, really stood out to me. Amy, who is a mentor and a close friend, shared three key pieces of advice:

Always be open to learning and trying new things.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions—no matter how simple they may seem.

Enjoy the journey and the challenges it brings.

The piece of advice that really resonated with me was “Don’t be afraid to ask questions.” I tend to be a bit quiet and sometimes hold back from asking questions, but I now understand how important it is to ask questions in order to grow and deepen my understanding. It’s something I’m committed to working on as I continue my journey in the healthcare field.

Slide 7: Group Collaboration

Working in a group has taught me a lot about the power of collaboration. Using the Critical Friends Model, we gave each other continuous feedback and support. We each took on different roles in the group, such as facilitator, reflector, and encourager. We also met in person at the library and used the resources available to us. Everyone in the group was supportive, and this made it easier for us to stay on track and think critically. It showed me how important it is to work with others and gain different perspectives when trying to solve problems and improve our work.

Slide 8: Conclusion

In conclusion, I’ve shared how my journey to ARA was shaped by the influence of my mother and my experience in aged care. I’ve talked about my career path and an alternative career in medical imaging. Both fields require key skills, including good communication, patience, and technical knowledge, which I’ve learned about through the Careers NZ website. The advice I received from Amy Lee about asking questions is something I will always keep in mind. And through my group collaboration, I’ve seen the value of teamwork in achieving goals and learning from others.

Thank you all for listening to my presentation. I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have!
