ATP: Adenosine Triphosphate

  • serves as the energy currency of the cell

  • monomer: Modified nucleotide

    • nucleotide: monomer of Nucleic Acids (like DNA & RNA)


  • Mitochondria produces ATP through the process of Aerobic Cellular Respiration

  • ATP is used for cellular processes that require energy (Ma’am)

    • Movement of cells or parts w/in cells

    • Active Transport

    • Anabolic Reactions

    • Muscle Contractions

    • etc.

  • Adenine —> nitrogenous base (rectangle)

  • Ribose —> pentose sugar (pentagon)

  • 3 Phosphate Groups —> functional group (circles)


  • Adenosine = Adenine + Ribose


  • ATP is like a spring bc it shoves all the negatively charged phosphates together (negatives repel e/o)

    • shoves them tg by creating bonds between them

    • (compresses like a spring)


ATP Hydrolysis: energy is released from ATP when the 3rd Phosphate group is broken off

  • bond between 2nd and 3rd phosphate is broken

  • Exergonic Reaction

  • creates ADP

ADP: Adenosine Diphosphate

  • contains some energy, but not as much as ATP


ADP Phosphorylation: addition of a phosphate group to ADP

  • regenerates ATP

  • requires energy (Endergonic)

  • Humans get the energy needed to perform ADP Phosphorylation from the breakdown of food molecules (like glucose) —> through process of Cellular Respiration

    • need energy to make energy
