Fertilization Process
- Fertilization Definition: Not just a moment, but a carefully coordinated process involving the contact and fusion of sperm and egg.
- Sperm Viability: Both sperm and egg have limited lifespans; sperm survive usually up to three days.
- Capacitation: A process sperm undergo in the female reproductive tract, taking up to seven hours before they can fertilize an egg.
- Fertilization Mechanism: Upon successful sperm entry into the egg, a zone reaction occurs:
- Release of cortical granules modifies zona pellucida, preventing further sperm entry (polyspermy).
Early Development Stages
- Zygote Formation: A diploid cell forming from the fusion of male and female gametes.
- Cleavage Divisions: Early divisions of the zygote represent rapid cell division without growth (cells get smaller), termed cleavage divisions.
- Morula and Blastocyst Stages: At around day 5 post-fertilization, the morula develops into a blastocyst with an inner cell mass and a trophoblast.
- Trophoblast: Will develop into part of the placenta.
- Implantation: The blastocyst embeds in the endometrium, causing some degradation to facilitate nutrient exchange.

- Blastocyst Cavity: As development progresses, a cavity forms inside the morula, giving rise to the blastocyst structure.
- Chorionic Villi: Structures that emerge from the trophoblast to establish connections with maternal blood for nutrient exchange via a placenta that develops throughout the pregnancy.
- Placenta Development: Provides nutrients to and removes wastes from the growing embryo/fetus, characterized by complex connections formed by chorionic villi that ensure effective gas exchange.
