Changes reflected in media images and messages. McRobbie studied girls magazines, 1970 emphasized importance of getting married, not left on shelf nowadays asssertive independent women

Changes in family:

Changes in family since 1970: increase in divorce , decrease of first marriages, increase in lone parent fams…

increased number of lone parent families may mean women need to take breadwinner role. This created a new adult role model- financially independent woman. Need well paid jobs and good qualifications increasing rate of divorce suggest girls think unwise to rely on husband as provider
