Core Meccan-Era Sirah Notes

Love & Status of the Prophet

  • Loving the Prophet rr is a condition of true ı^ma^nîmân; believers must love him more than themselves (Bukhârî/ Muslim).
  • Taste of faith: Allah and His Messenger being dearer than all else.
  • Constant remembrance and conformity to his Sunnah are prerequisites of love.
  • Two categories of Prophetic acts:
    • Acts exclusive to him (e.g.
    • continuous fasting,
    • spending entire nights in prayer,
    • forbiddance of inheritance/ alms for his family).
    • Acts universally emulable – obligatory for Muslims within their capacity.

Knowing the Prophet & the Qur’ân

  • His 2323-year life = practical exegesis of the Qur’ân; impossible to grasp the Book without his Sirah.
  • Only man whose entire life is fully recorded and preserved.
  • Prophetic example converts Islamic morality from theory to living practice.

Choice of Arabia for Revelation

  • Arabs: isolated, un-colonised, strong virtues (honour, bravery, generosity) yet in imbalance → needed guidance.
  • Illiterate society & an unlettered Prophet removed suspicion that Islam was copied from previous scriptures.
  • Arabia’s central location eased later spread (trade routes, access to Asia–Africa–Europe).
  • Arabic language: richest, most eloquent medium for Divine message.

Kaabah & Mecca Highlights

  • Built first by Âdam uu; rebuilt by Ibrâhîm & Ismâ‘îl uu; center of tawhîd.
  • Zamzam miraculously sprung for Hâjar & Ismâ‘îl.
  • Abraha’s ‘Year of the Elephant’ (571 CE) confirms Divine protection of the Sacred House (sûrah al-Fîl).
  • Key services around the Kaabah:
    • Sidânah/ Hijâbah (custody & covering),
    • Siqâyah (watering pilgrims),
    • Ridânah (feeding pilgrims).

Pre-Islamic Hanîf Monotheists

  • Hanîf = pure monotheist on Ibrâhîm’s way; notable figures: Waraqa b. Nawfal, Zayd b. ‘Amr, etc.
  • Religion of Ibrâhîm mentioned as neither Jew nor Christian but upright hanı^fhanîf (e.g.
    Q!:!3!:!67Q! :!3!:!67).

Lineage & Early Life of the Prophet

  • Lineage pure & honoured through Adnân to Ibrâhîm uu.
  • Father ‘Abd-Allâh died before birth; mother Âminah passed when he was 66; grandfather ‘Abd al-Muṭṭalib when 88.
  • Fostered by :
    • Suwaybah (briefly),
    • Ḥalîmah bint Sa‘d (years of barakah: flocks prospered).
  • First chest-cleaving (shaḥr-uṣ-ṣadr) at age 44: heart washed & filled with mercy.

Character in Youth

Marriage to Khadîjah cc

  • Married at 2525; she 4040; first to believe in his mission; support & reassurance during first revelation.

Prelude to Prophethood (Retreat)

  • Habitual seclusion in Hira during Ramaḍân; deep contemplation of creation and Meccan misguidance.
  • Truthful dreams for 66 months – part of 1/461/46 of prophethood.

First Revelation (Ramaḍân 17, 610 CE)

  • Angel Jibrîl commands three times: “Read!”.
  • Verses (96:1–5)\text{(96:1–5)} revealed.
  • Khadîjah reassures him; Waraqa confirms prophethood.

Intermission & Resumption

  • Short pause (fat ra) after first wahy – period of yearning and spiritual preparation.
  • Surah al-Mudaththir then begins continuous revelation.

Modes of Revelation

  1. Truthful dreams.
  2. Jibrîl in angelic form.
  3. Angel appearing as a man.
  4. Inaudible inspiration to the heart.
  5. Ringing sound – heaviest form.
  6. Direct speech without medium (e.g.
    Mi‘râj).
