Chemistry - Section 9.3 Acids

HOW TO IDENTIFY:

  • If the formula starts with H its an acid

  • 2 types of acids - binary acids & ternary acids

  • Binary acids: H & a non-metal

  • Ternary acids: H & oxyanions

BINARY ACIDS:

  • acids consist of hydrogen and one other non-metal.

  • They become an acid when dissolved in water

  • If they are not dissolved, these compounds are named just like binary ionic compounds.

  • If they are dissolved in water, these compounds follow a diferent naming system: they use the prefix hydro- and give the root name an -ic ending. add the word acid.

  • hydro______ic acid

TERNARY ACIDS:

  • Ternary acids contain more than 2 elements, namely hydrogen, oxygen, and at least one other nonmetal.

  • The oxygen and the other nonmetal are often combined in a polyatomic ion.

  • The names are derived from the anions in the acids.

  • If the anions name ends in -ate, change to -ic and add the word acid.

  • If the anion’s name ends in -ite, change to -ous and add the word acid.
