Introduction to Potentiometers
A potentiometer, commonly referred to as a "pot", is a variable resistor that can be used for various applications such as controlling audio volume.
It consists of three terminals and can come in various shapes.
In circuit diagrams, potentiometers are represented by specific symbols.
Structure of a Potentiometer
Three Terminals:
Two outer terminals (blue and green) are connected to a resistive element.
The center terminal (black) is connected to a wiper, which can slide along the resistive element.

As a rheostat (variable resistor):** Only two pins are utilized – one outer pin and the center pin. This adjusts resistance based on the wiper position.
As a voltage divider: All three terminals are used – one for GND, one for Vcc, and the middle for output voltage.
Potentiometer Resistance Values
Example: A 10kΩ potentiometer has a maximum resistance of 10kΩ and a minimum of 0Ω.
The resistance value can change smoothly from 0Ω to 10kΩ by adjusting the wiper's position.
Voltage Divider Functionality
When used as a voltage divider, the potentiometer converts a large voltage into a smaller one.

Potentiometer Taper
Definition: The taper refers to how the resistance changes in relation to the position of the potentiometer.

Logarithmic Taper: Resistance changes non-linearly; used primarily for audio applications since humans perceive sound intensity logarithmically. Marked with an "A".
