Body Temperature
Measurement
Purpose: Measures the balance between heat production and heat loss.
- Febrile: A person with a body temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher.
- Afebrile: A person with a body temperature below 100.4°F (38°C).
Normal Temperature Range
Standard Normal Range: 97°F – 99°F (36.1°C – 37.2°C).
Factors affecting temperature:
- Time of day.
- Allergic reactions.
- Illness.
- Stress.
- Exposure to heat or cold.
- Improper thermometer placement.
- Malfunction of equipment.

Pulse (Heart Rate)
Measurement
Purpose: Measures the number of heartbeats per minute.
Normal Pulse Range
Adults: 60–100 beats per minute (bpm).
Variances: Lower in fit adults, higher in sedentary individuals.
Equipment Used
Watch or clock with a second hand.
Stethoscope (for apical pulse).
Intervals for counting pulse:
- Taken in 15, 20, 30, or 60-second intervals.
- Multiplication of counted beats by 4, 3, 2 respectively.

List of Pulse Sites and Techniques
Radial Pulse
- Location: Alongside the radial bone; on the thumb side of the wrist.
- Reason for Use: Common site to check pulse manually.Carotid Pulse
- Location: Alongside the trachea near the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
- Reason for Use: Allows for palpation without interference from large muscle.Brachial Pulse
- Location: On the inner aspect of the biceps muscle in the upper arm.
- Reason for Use: Easily located in infants; used in adults at the antecubital space.Apical Pulse
- Location: Apex of the heart, on the left side of the chest.
- Reason for Use: Auscultated with a stethoscope; used when heartbeat is weak.Temporal Pulse
- Location: Next to the front edge of the ears.
- Reason for Use: Also used for temperature measurement.Femoral Pulse
- Location: In the groin/crease between thigh and lower abdomen.
- Reason for Use: Used in surgical procedures; pressure can slow bleeding.Popliteal Pulse
- Location: Behind the knee, toward the midline of the body.
- Reason for Use: Checks circulation.Dorsalis Pedis Pulse
- Location: On the dorsal/top side of the foot.
- Reason for Use: Checks circulation to the feet.Posterior Tibial Pulse
- Location: Just behind the medial malleolus (ankle bone).
- Reason for Use: Also used to check circulation to the feet.

Respirations (Breathing)
Measurement
Purpose: Measures the number of breaths taken per minute.
- Types of breathing observed:
- Normal rhythm.
- Labored breathing.
- Gurgling sounds.
- Irregular (e.g., Cheyne-Stokes).
Normal Respiratory Rate
Adults: 12–20 breaths per minute.
Equipment Used
Watch or timer.
Observation (typically no special device needed).
Stethoscope (optional, to hear lung sounds).
Common Problems Affecting Respiratory Measurements

Blood Pressure

Normal Blood Pressure Range
Generally accepted normal range: approximately 120/80 mmHg.
