Cell Theory
All living things are made of cells
Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in an organism
Cells come from reproduction of other cells
How were these cells discovered?
Robert Hooke cut up cork and used a microscope to examine it. He found that it was porous and perforated. He called these things cells because they reminded him of the cells that monks live in
Who was the first to work with LIVING cells?
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek inspected dead plant cells with a microscope and agreed with Hooke
Who created Cell Theory? * built off of each other
Matthias Schliedon found that all plants are composed of cells
Zoologist Theodor Schwann found that animals are too
Physician Rudolf Virchow found that cells only come from other cells
How can cells be different from eachother?
Size - are limited by ratio between outer surface area and volume
Shape - cells differ in shapes to suit it’s functions ex. nerve cell has extensions for impulses
Internal organization - organelles are internal structures that perform specific functions for the cell and maintain its life
What are the two types of cells?
Prokaryotes are unicellular and do not have a nucleus
Eukaryotes are multicellular and have a membrane bound nucleus and other organelles
PARTS OF THE CELL
What is surrounding the cell?
Cell membrane - selectively permeable (controls what goes in or out) - made of lipids and proteins- takes in nutrients and disregards waste- a major lipid in it is MEMBRANE LIPID
What is t
What is the nucleus?
A large organelle near the center of the cell that contains most of the genetic information for the cell and directs most of it’s activities- up to 99% of the mass of cell is here
What is the nucleolus?
What is the Golgi Apparatus?
An organelle that packages and processes substances produced by the cell
