Maintaining Biodiversity

Why It Matters

  • Biodiversity: variety of all species of organisms on Earth.

  • Rich biodiversity → more stable ecosystems.

  • Human activities (deforestation, pollution, land use, global warming) reduce biodiversity.

Ways to Reduce Biodiversity Loss

1. Breeding Programs
  • Aim: increase numbers of endangered species.

  • Example: Sumatran tiger – only a few hundred remain in the wild.

  • Zoos collaborate to breed individuals and maintain genetic diversity.

2. Protecting & Regenerating Habitats
  • Aim: Protect and regenerate habitats at risk

  • Example: Wetlands high biodiversity but many were drained for crops.

  • Actions:

    • Protect remaining wetlands.

    • Re-flood drained wetlands to restore habitats.

3. Conservation on Farms
  • Monoculture (single-crop fields) → low biodiversity.

  • Solutions:

    • Field margins: strips of land left for wild plants & animals.

    • Hedgerows: plant diverse species between fields → provide habitats.

4. Government Action
  • Reduce deforestation → e.g., national parks in the Amazon Rainforest.

  • Reduce carbon dioxide emissions → renewable energy (wind, solar) to combat global warming.

5. Individual Action
  • Recycle waste → less waste in landfills → fewer habitats destroyed.

  • Every small action contributes to preserving biodiversity.

Key Idea: Biodiversity can be preserved through a combination of breeding programs, habitat protection, sustainable farming, government policies, and individual responsibility.
