Miscellaneous Psych Notes

Motivational Interviewing Techniques:

-The ruler method: on the ambivalent action (ie. quitting smoking), ask 0 to 10 where the patient sits in their motivation. When they give their answer, you ask why not a lesser number. why not a 1 or 2. They will then start doing the change talk themselves, and you validate that. Then, you ask what can be done to get them to a higher number.

-Value talk: Acknowledge that the person loves the substance (ie. weed), but it causes a problem (ie. makes them psychotic). Validate the reasons they like it. Then mention how they’re in a psychiatric hospital due to the problem the substance causes. Then just say it matter of fact: ‘So you like weed, but you’re getting hospitalized for the given consequence, and ask what can we do to try to figure this out? They will start the change talk themselves.
