Forgetting in Memory
Overview of Forgetting
Forgetting refers to the inability to retrieve learned information. This phenomenon can occur due to various reasons, primarily categorized as availability problems and accessibility problems.
Short-term Memory (STM) Forgetting: Forgetting happenings in STM is often attributed to its limited capacity and duration. Information may be displaced by new information or may just fade away over time.
Long-term Memory (LTM) Forgetting: Forgetting in LTM can also be due to decay, where the information stored weakens over time, or it can happen because the information is locked away but difficult to retrieve. Here, context becomes important whereby cues can aid our ability to remember.
Types of Forgetting and Theories
Interference Theory
Interference theory posits that forgetting occurs when similar information interferes with the retrieval of a memory. This theory is divided into two key types:
1. Retroactive Interference
- Defined as when newer information disrupts the recall of older information.
- Example Study: Underwood and Postman's (1960) experiment involved two groups learning paired word lists. The experimental group learned a second list with shared first words, leading to poorer recall on the first list, suggesting retroactive interference affected their memory.
2. Proactive Interference
- This occurs when older information hinders the recall of new information.
- Example Study: Underwood (1957) showcased proactive interference by showing that participants recalling word lists showed only 20% recall for the last list after 24 hours if they had learned multiple previous lists, while recall shot up to 80% if they had only learned the last one.
Strengths and Weaknesses of the Interference Theory
Strengths:
- Supported by numerous well-controlled laboratory studies.
- Evidence for interference is observable in real-world scenarios, such as language learning.
Weaknesses:
- Interference appears more significant in artificial experimental settings than in natural life.
- The theory does not explain the cognitive or biological processes underlying interference fully.
Cue-Dependent Forgetting
Another significant theory of forgetting revolves around retrieval failure, where memories still exist but cannot be accessed without the right cues.
- Cues can be internal (e.g., mood) or external (e.g., environmental context).
- Cue-Dependent Learning suggests that recalling information is more successful when the recall context matches the encoding context.
Example Study: Tulving and Psotka (1971)
Tulving and Psotka compared interference with cue-dependent forgetting. Participants learned lists of words categorized into groups. Two recall methods were tested:
- Total Free Recall: Participants recalled words without cues, revealing evidence of retroactive interference as success declined with more lists learned.
- Cued Recall: Participants had category names as cues, allowing consistent recall (about 70%) regardless of how many lists they had learned. This indicated that while the information was not forgotten, it was just difficult to access, thus supporting cue-dependent forgetting.
Evaluation of Tulving and Psotka's Study
- The study had strong controls reducing extraneous variables but raises concerns about ecological validity due to its artificial setting and task.
- Limitations include the challenge in generalizing results beyond word lists.
Strengths and Weaknesses of Cue-Dependent Forgetting
Strengths:
- Strong evidence correlating cue-dependent forgetting and LTM, indicating that many memories are accessible with the proper cues.
Weaknesses:
- The nature of evidence, often based on artificial memory tasks, may lack real-world relevance.
- Difficulties exist in testing accessibility across all memory types, particularly procedural memory which may not be dependent on cues for recall.
