Example: George reproaches Lennie when he does something wrong, like when Lennie breaks things or causes trouble, making George feel disappointed and upset.

Obscenely (adverb): In a rude or offensive way.

Example: The men on the ranch speak obscenely about Curley’s wife, calling her names like tart and trouble.Curley also speaks obscenely to Lennie when he picks a fight with him just because Lennie is bigger than him. Crooks also speaks obscenely to himself, calling himself worthless because of how isolated he feels as a Black man on the ranch.

Liberated (adjective): Freed or set free.

Example: When George makes the hard choice to end Lennie’s life, he feels a kind of liberation, setting Lennie free from the fear and trouble he would have faced.

Pugnacious (adjective): Always wanting to fight.

Example: Curley is pugnacious, always looking for a reason to fight, especially with Lennie. 

Bias (noun): When you favor one thing or person over others, often unfairly.

Example: Curley was biased against his wife, always thinking she was lying or cheating, even though there was no proof.

Deceit (noun): Lying or hiding the truth.

Example: Curley used deceit when he lied to the boss about how he hurt his hand, making up a story to cover it up.

Festive (adjective): Cheerful and fun, like a celebration.

Example: horseshoes party and when the men talked about their dreams of a better life, it felt hopeful and cheerful.

Festively (adverb): Done in a happy, celebratory way.

Example: The ranch workers rarely acted festively, but when they did, it was when they talked about their dream of a house and a better future.

Moral Decay (noun): When people start doing wrong things and forget about what’s right.

Example: Some people think the way the men treat Curley’s wife and Crooks shows moral decay, meaning they don’t care about being kind or fair.
