TKAM ~ Ch. 20-24
Mr. Dolphus Raymond
Lives with a black woman with mixed children
Offers Dill to drink his soda to settle his stomack (due to him crying)
Scout thought it was alcohol, but it was actually coca-cola
Scout gives a desccription on Dolphus
Smells like leather, horses, and cottonseed
he wore English riding boots
Dolphus didnt want them to go around and tell people his drink isnt actually alcohol due to that would be “ruining” his reputation
due to him sleeping with a black woman, he acts like hes drinking that way people can think that due to being “drunk” he wont “change” his way.
Others wont understand why he lives like this
Jem, Dill, and Scout comes back to the Courtroom
Atticus closing statement
was about how this is a simple case, and if you convict Tom Robinson you have to be sure beyond all reasonable doubt that he is guilty.
no evidence Mayella was raped
two witnesses that their stories dont even line up
defendant is not guilty, but someone else is in the courtroom
Mayella is trying to hide her own guilt that she likes a black man by accusing him of raping her due to it not being “correct” to liking a black man (in this society)
States that Tom is not guilty, he tried to pull away.
Tells judges to not let their biases take control of them all due to the colour of his skin
Calpurina comes into the courtroom
Calpurina states that she will give a note to Atticus; says its not apart of the case
Note reads (by alexandria)
Kids missing
Mr. Underwood snitches 😡
Says theyve been up the colored balcony since 1:18 PM
Atticus calls them down
Jem thought we won, he was excitted
Atticus states that they should go back home and eat, but they could come back as they finish their food (eat slowly)
Calpurina was upset that they were listening to everything, as they belive it was fit for children
Said that they should be ashamed of themselves
Jem was laughing a bit, but offered to tell her about it
SHe says NO
Dill was allowed to stay over for supper
Aunt Alexandria almost fainted when she was told where the kids were
theyve been gone for a hour
Im assuming they went back due to Jem still talking about the courtroom and how they were all still
Jem is confident they won
Reverend said hes not sure due to many juries not taking the side of a black man
Mr.Gilmer was at the window talking with Mr Undewood
Atticus was walking around the Jury Box Area
Courtroom was quiet, Dill fell asleep on Jems shoulder, Scout was trying her hardest to stay awake
Scout says it reminded him of when Atticus shot the rabbid dog
Scout was “daydreaming” describing the jury coming back, moving like underwatter swimmers
Scout was shutting her eyes as it was readed out
Jury voted “guilty…guilty…guilty”
Jem seems to feel hurt as he gripped the bar, making his hands white, and shoulders jerking at every “guilty”
Reverend Syke said to Scout that her father is passing
leaving the courthouse, jem cried
angry tears
said it wasnt right
went all the way to the courner square where Atticus was waiting for them
Atticus seemed to be unfazed at everything
Atticus said it was unfair also, but they do this every time, all due to the color of their skin. Jem agrees that its completly unfair.
The next morning they recceive food from the Black Community
they appreciate that Atticus defended a black man
Atticus eyes filled with tears
He is greatful for what they have given to him'
One food item being Jar of Pickled Pigs Knuckles
Atticus tells Calpurina to tell them thank you, but to never give his family food due to it being rough times right now.
Later that day Dill and Scout goes to Mrs. Maudie house
They tell them about the case
She says that Judge Taylore also cares about Tom and so do many more
she says this because she assigned Atticus to him
Judge Taylor decided this even thought normally another judge is assigned (though hes not very good at defending)
As they go home, Mrs Stephanie tells the kids that Mr Bob spat on his fae and said that he would get him even if it took the rest of his life
Atticus only said that he wished Bob Ewell (Mayella father) Didnt chew on tobbaco, he said nothing else of the situation
Stephanie also said that he cursed at him, spat on him, and threatened to kill him all when he was leaving the post office
Atticus didnt care, he just got a handkerchief, wiped his face, and stood there
Jem was worried due to the death threats
Atticus says that its okay, and that he destroyed his credibility in the trial, so if spitting in his face and threatening him saved Mayella one extra time from a beating, hes completly okay with that
Kids stopped being afraid after this
Also stated that Tom Robinson case still hasnt received gigher court review, so he has a good chance to be free
Tom moved to another prison (Enfield Prison Farm)
His wife and kids cant visit him
he may get the chair unless the governor commutes his hair
The jury actually took a few hours to make up their mind
usually would take them a few minutes
One of the Juros wanted to set Tom free
the Cunninghams
Scout wanted to invite him over some time due to him wanting Tom free
Alexandria says no, because theyre not her “kind”, but she should still be kind to them. but maybe dont invite him over
Scout wants to play with him
alexandria says “Because - He - is - Trash”
Scout was sobbing to her room as Jems had his arms around her leading to her room
Jem suggests her to take up sewing or something to become more ladylike
Jem says theres 4 kinds in this worlds
Ordinary folkes
Cunninghams
The Ewells, who live in the dump
The African Americans; coloured
In this order they all hate eachother (Ordinary→cunningham→ewell→coloured)
Scout doesnt think this way
He thinks theres only one kind
Folks
Jem said that he thought this too, but why cant we all get along
He found out why Boo Radley wants to stay inside
all because he want to
September time, Dill is ready to leave
went swimming with Jem
Going in naked, so Scout couldnt come
Scout decded to spend her time with Calpurina and Mrs. Maudie
Aunt Alexandria had ladies over, and asked scout to join them for refreshments
Scout was wearing her Sunday dress (pink) and didnt want to spill anything on it due to Calpurina cleaning it
she didnt want her to have anymore trouble
She offered help to Calpurina
Carried coffee pot
Mrs, Maudie said shes rlly dressed up, and looks nice, asking her where are her britches today
she says its under her dress
everyone laughed
They asked what scout would be when she was older
suggested to be a lawyer
scout doesnt know
Mrs. Merriwater said its so fortunate that she lives in a christian family
She starts talking about the trials, saying how no woman is safe in their beds sleeping at night
she belives Tom was guilty
Says that northerners are hypocrites, as they let coloured folks free; but you wont see them sitting in the same table eating with them
Scout was thinking if she was the Gov of Alabama, she would let Tom go so quickly
Calpurina said Tom was having it bad
The day before going to Prison Camp Tom lost all hope and told Atticus theres no use in trying
Atticus came in the house, white face and asked to have Cal to come with him
Tom died
Aunt Alexandria put her hands to her mouth
Allegedly due to him running away to escape
police allegedly warned him
he continued to clime
shot him 17 times
Asked Cal to break the news to his wife, Helen
Aunt alexandria was seen putting her hands on her face, appearing as if shes crying
when she took her hands off she didnt seem sad
Mrs. Maudie was breathing heavily
Aunt Alexandria says that this ruins Atticus mental health even if he doesnt show this, and that this town is wrecking him
Scout was shacking
Mrs. Maudie said get it back together, and theyre going back to the room with the ladies
resumes the conversations with the christians works they had done
Aunt alexandria allowed scout to get a cookie, most likely because she felt sympathy towards scout due to all of this happening (toms death)
Scout grabs the tray and offers it to Merriweather, acting more ladylike, inspired by her aunt due to acting like a lady in a time like this
