TKAM ~ Ch. 20-24

Ch. 20

  • Mr. Dolphus Raymond

    • Lives with a black woman with mixed children

      • Offers Dill to drink his soda to settle his stomack (due to him crying)

  • Scout thought it was alcohol, but it was actually coca-cola

  • Scout gives a desccription on Dolphus

    • Smells like leather, horses, and cottonseed

    • he wore English riding boots

  • Dolphus didnt want them to go around and tell people his drink isnt actually alcohol due to that would be “ruining” his reputation

    • due to him sleeping with a black woman, he acts like hes drinking that way people can think that due to being “drunk” he wont “change” his way.

      • Others wont understand why he lives like this

  • Jem, Dill, and Scout comes back to the Courtroom

  • Atticus closing statement

    • was about how this is a simple case, and if you convict Tom Robinson you have to be sure beyond all reasonable doubt that he is guilty.

      • no evidence Mayella was raped

      • two witnesses that their stories dont even line up

      • defendant is not guilty, but someone else is in the courtroom

      • Mayella is trying to hide her own guilt that she likes a black man by accusing him of raping her due to it not being “correct” to liking a black man (in this society)

      • States that Tom is not guilty, he tried to pull away.

      • Tells judges to not let their biases take control of them all due to the colour of his skin

  • Calpurina comes into the courtroom

Ch. 21

  • Calpurina states that she will give a note to Atticus; says its not apart of the case

    • Note reads (by alexandria)

      • Kids missing

  • Mr. Underwood snitches 😡

    • Says theyve been up the colored balcony since 1:18 PM

  • Atticus calls them down

  • Jem thought we won, he was excitted

  • Atticus states that they should go back home and eat, but they could come back as they finish their food (eat slowly)

  • Calpurina was upset that they were listening to everything, as they belive it was fit for children

    • Said that they should be ashamed of themselves

  • Jem was laughing a bit, but offered to tell her about it

    • SHe says NO

  • Dill was allowed to stay over for supper

  • Aunt Alexandria almost fainted when she was told where the kids were

    • theyve been gone for a hour

  • Im assuming they went back due to Jem still talking about the courtroom and how they were all still

    • Jem is confident they won

    • Reverend said hes not sure due to many juries not taking the side of a black man

  • Mr.Gilmer was at the window talking with Mr Undewood

  • Atticus was walking around the Jury Box Area

  • Courtroom was quiet, Dill fell asleep on Jems shoulder, Scout was trying her hardest to stay awake

    • Scout says it reminded him of when Atticus shot the rabbid dog

  • Scout was “daydreaming” describing the jury coming back, moving like underwatter swimmers

  • Scout was shutting her eyes as it was readed out

    • Jury voted “guilty…guilty…guilty”

      • Jem seems to feel hurt as he gripped the bar, making his hands white, and shoulders jerking at every “guilty”

    • Reverend Syke said to Scout that her father is passing

Ch. 22

  • leaving the courthouse, jem cried

    • angry tears

    • said it wasnt right

  • went all the way to the courner square where Atticus was waiting for them

    • Atticus seemed to be unfazed at everything

  • Atticus said it was unfair also, but they do this every time, all due to the color of their skin. Jem agrees that its completly unfair.

  • The next morning they recceive food from the Black Community

    • they appreciate that Atticus defended a black man

  • Atticus eyes filled with tears

    • He is greatful for what they have given to him'

      • One food item being Jar of Pickled Pigs Knuckles

  • Atticus tells Calpurina to tell them thank you, but to never give his family food due to it being rough times right now.

  • Later that day Dill and Scout goes to Mrs. Maudie house

    • They tell them about the case

      • She says that Judge Taylore also cares about Tom and so do many more

      • she says this because she assigned Atticus to him

        • Judge Taylor decided this even thought normally another judge is assigned (though hes not very good at defending)

  • As they go home, Mrs Stephanie tells the kids that Mr Bob spat on his fae and said that he would get him even if it took the rest of his life

Ch. 23

  • Atticus only said that he wished Bob Ewell (Mayella father) Didnt chew on tobbaco, he said nothing else of the situation

    • Stephanie also said that he cursed at him, spat on him, and threatened to kill him all when he was leaving the post office

    • Atticus didnt care, he just got a handkerchief, wiped his face, and stood there

  • Jem was worried due to the death threats

    • Atticus says that its okay, and that he destroyed his credibility in the trial, so if spitting in his face and threatening him saved Mayella one extra time from a beating, hes completly okay with that

      • Kids stopped being afraid after this

    • Also stated that Tom Robinson case still hasnt received gigher court review, so he has a good chance to be free

  • Tom moved to another prison (Enfield Prison Farm)

    • His wife and kids cant visit him

    • he may get the chair unless the governor commutes his hair

  • The jury actually took a few hours to make up their mind

    • usually would take them a few minutes

  • One of the Juros wanted to set Tom free

    • the Cunninghams

      • Scout wanted to invite him over some time due to him wanting Tom free

  • Alexandria says no, because theyre not her “kind”, but she should still be kind to them. but maybe dont invite him over

    • Scout wants to play with him

      • alexandria says “Because - He - is - Trash”

  • Scout was sobbing to her room as Jems had his arms around her leading to her room

  • Jem suggests her to take up sewing or something to become more ladylike

  • Jem says theres 4 kinds in this worlds

    • Ordinary folkes

    • Cunninghams

    • The Ewells, who live in the dump

    • The African Americans; coloured

      • In this order they all hate eachother (Ordinary→cunningham→ewell→coloured)

  • Scout doesnt think this way

    • He thinks theres only one kind

      • Folks

    • Jem said that he thought this too, but why cant we all get along

  • He found out why Boo Radley wants to stay inside

  • September time, Dill is ready to leave

    • went swimming with Jem

      • Going in naked, so Scout couldnt come

        • Scout decded to spend her time with Calpurina and Mrs. Maudie

  • Aunt Alexandria had ladies over, and asked scout to join them for refreshments

    • Scout was wearing her Sunday dress (pink) and didnt want to spill anything on it due to Calpurina cleaning it

      • she didnt want her to have anymore trouble

  • She offered help to Calpurina

    • Carried coffee pot

  • Mrs, Maudie said shes rlly dressed up, and looks nice, asking her where are her britches today

    • she says its under her dress

      • everyone laughed

  • They asked what scout would be when she was older

    • suggested to be a lawyer

      • scout doesnt know

  • Mrs. Merriwater said its so fortunate that she lives in a christian family

    • She starts talking about the trials, saying how no woman is safe in their beds sleeping at night

      • she belives Tom was guilty

    • Says that northerners are hypocrites, as they let coloured folks free; but you wont see them sitting in the same table eating with them

  • Scout was thinking if she was the Gov of Alabama, she would let Tom go so quickly

  • Calpurina said Tom was having it bad

  • The day before going to Prison Camp Tom lost all hope and told Atticus theres no use in trying

  • Atticus came in the house, white face and asked to have Cal to come with him

    • Tom died

      • Aunt Alexandria put her hands to her mouth

    • Allegedly due to him running away to escape

      • police allegedly warned him

        • he continued to clime

        • shot him 17 times

    • Asked Cal to break the news to his wife, Helen

  • Aunt alexandria was seen putting her hands on her face, appearing as if shes crying

    • when she took her hands off she didnt seem sad

  • Mrs. Maudie was breathing heavily

  • Aunt Alexandria says that this ruins Atticus mental health even if he doesnt show this, and that this town is wrecking him

  • Scout was shacking

  • Mrs. Maudie said get it back together, and theyre going back to the room with the ladies

  • resumes the conversations with the christians works they had done

  • Aunt alexandria allowed scout to get a cookie, most likely because she felt sympathy towards scout due to all of this happening (toms death)

    • Scout grabs the tray and offers it to Merriweather, acting more ladylike, inspired by her aunt due to acting like a lady in a time like this
