  • The crowning of Charlemagne at 800 AD on Christmas Day, was a symbol that the church had more than the king and government. This suggests that the church was above the government, and had influence over the king, and his decisions. 

  • Since the Bishop collects a tithe from everyone, that was 10 percent of the person's income and made the church rich and the Bishop rich.

  • The Bishop reports to the king and so does the Thames so that shows that since the bishop is with the church that they exerted their power through the king, instead of being above him. They help the king make his decisions, and prevent him from overpowering over the kingdom and others.

Importance of land

  • Quid Pro Quo,this for that, this meaning land from the king,and that being service, loyalty, protection that is given to the king from the vassals because he gave them a fief. This describes feudalism and is one reason that land was important.

  • The village commons is a piece of land that no one owns and everybody can use it

  • In Middle Ages land was how you got your rank. If you had a lot of land you would be a high rank. In the Anglo-Saxon rule there was a law called the wergild that means the high the rank you are the worse the punishment the person that killed you would get this would also correspond with the how much land because you could have a lot of land and go up ranks and make the punishment worse for them.

  • The glebe was given to the church from the king and the church used the glebe for farming and made money off the grain that they grew.
