Magnesium Sulfate

What is it used for? Prevention of seizures in preeclampsia, slowing/stopping preterm labor, and protecting the brain of premature babies

Side Effects:

  •    Decreased RR and BP -

  • Smooth muscle relaxer so decrease RR, we give it in asthmatic patients

  • Drowsiness, fatigue

  • Nausea/vomit

  • Dizzy

  • Muscle weak

  • Blurred vision

  • ALTERED LOC

  • sweating/flushing

Toxicity level = Greater than 9.6

B = blood pressure drop

U = decreased urine output

R = decreased RR

P = patellar DTR absent

What is the antidote? Calcium gluconate
