Empathy

What is the difference between empathy and sympathy?

Empathy - involves understanding and sharing the feelings of another person, experiencing their emotions from their perspective.

Time I have showed empathy: While volunteering, I noticed a patient who was sad about the fact none of their family had come to visit them and was all alone. After finishing my task, I sat with the patient and allowed them to vent to me, listening to their concerns. I offered to speak to the nurse to ask for their family members to be contacted and to play a game with them to cheer them up. This way, I was not only sharing their feelings with them, I was offering solutions to cheer them up based on their perspective

Sympathy - feeling pity for someone else’s misfortune

While it shows concern, it’s less about fully understanding the persons feelings and more about expressing you care but from a distance.

Could come across as feeling sorry for someone but without deeply engaging with their emotions.

Involves offering condolences but not fully engaging with their emotional experience.

Conclusion - Empathy is a more valuable skill as it promotes deeper connections, encouraging a sense of partnership and collaboration while sympathy can create a sense of separation. It’s more valuable in medicine as it strengthens the patient doctor relationship, improving patient satisfaction and enhancing patient care.
