Epithelial Tissue Types

Simple Squamous Epithelium

  • Description: A single layer of flattened cells.

  • Functions: Involved in filtration, absorption, and secretion.

  • Locations: Found in the kidneys, lungs, serous membranes, capillaries, and the linings of blood vessels and heart.

Simple Cuboidal Epithelium

  • Description: Composed of a single layer of cube-shaped cells.

  • Functions: Primarily for absorption and secretion.

  • Locations: Located in the kidneys, surface of ovaries, and various glands.

Simple Columnar Epithelium

  • Description: A single layer of elongated cells, often with nuclei near the basal end.

  • Functions: Functions in absorption and secretion.

  • Locations: Present in the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine.

Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium

  • Description: Appears multilayered because of nuclei at different levels, but is a single layer.

  • Functions: Used for absorption and secretion.

  • Locations: Found in the trachea, bronchi, nasal cavity, many bronchioles, and some sperm ducts.

Non-Keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium

  • Description: Multiple layers of cells; outer layers are flat but nuclei are still visible.

  • Functions: Provides protection.

  • Locations: Located in the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, anal canal, and vagina.

Keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium

  • Description: Composed of multiple layers of cells; outermost layer is flat and flaky with nuclei not visible.

  • Functions: Provides protection.

  • Locations: Found in the skin.

Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium

  • Description: Two or more layers of cells with the outermost layer being cuboidal.

  • Functions: Provides protection.

  • Locations: Found in the larger ducts of mammary glands, sweat glands, salivary glands, and pancreas.

Stratified Columnar Epithelium

  • Description: Two or more layers of cells with the outermost layer being elongated.

  • Functions: Provides protection and secretion.

  • Locations: Present in parts of the male urethra.

Transitional Epithelium

  • Description: Multiple layers of cells; the outermost cells are brick-like when relaxed and squamous when stretched.

  • Functions: Offers protection and allows stretching.

  • Locations: Found in the urinary bladder, uterus, and urethra.

Connective Tissue Types

Areolar Connective Tissue

  • Description: Composed of fibroblasts, mast cells, and macrophages embedded in a gel-like ground substance with a loose arrangement of fibers.

  • Functions: Cushions organs, contains blood vessels to supply organs, and serves as a fluid reservoir.

  • Locations: Underlies most epithelial tissues, in the upper dermis, around organs, and within nerves and muscles.

Adipose Tissue

  • Description: Contains large fat vacuoles, giving it an empty appearance.

  • Functions: Used for fat storage, insulation, and cushioning.

  • Locations: Found under the skin (hypodermis), around organs, and in the abdominal cavity.

Reticular Connective Tissue

  • Description: A loose network of reticular fibers supporting various blood cells.

  • Functions: Supports cells in organs.

  • Locations: Found in lymphoid organs such as the spleen, tonsils, thymus, and lymph nodes.

Dense Regular Connective Tissue

  • Description: Fibroblasts scattered among densely packed collagen fibers arranged in parallel rows.

  • Functions: Resists tension in a single direction.

  • Locations: Forms tendons and ligaments.

Dense Irregular Connective Tissue

  • Description: Fibroblasts scattered among densely packed collagen fibers arranged in various directions.

  • Functions: Resists tension in multiple directions.

  • Locations: Found in capsules around organs and the lower reticular region of the dermis.

Elastic Connective Tissue

  • Description: Fibroblasts scattered among densely packed parallel collagen and elastic fibers.

  • Functions: Provides recoil after stretching.

  • Locations: Found in large blood vessels and elastic ligaments between vertebrae.

Hyaline Cartilage

  • Description: Chondrocytes located in lacunae with no visible fibers.

  • Functions: Provides flexible support.

  • Locations: Found at the ends of bones at joints, attaching ribs to the sternum, and forming most of the fetal skeleton.

Elastic Cartilage

  • Description: Contains chondrocytes in lacunae with elastic fibers arranged irregularly.

  • Functions: Provides bendable support.

  • Locations: Found in the outer ear.

Fibrocartilage

  • Description: Chondrocytes in lacunae with collagen fibers arranged in parallel rows.

  • Functions: Provides cushioning.

  • Locations: Found between vertebrae as pads and in the knees.

Bone Tissue

  • Description: Composed of osteocytes in lacunae surrounded by a calcified matrix.

  • Functions: Provides leverage, support, and protection.

  • Locations: Forms the skeleton.

Blood

  • Description: Composed of leukocytes and erythrocytes in a liquid matrix.

  • Functions: Transports materials, protects against diseases, and helps regulate pressure and temperature.

  • Locations: Found in blood vessels.

Muscle Tissue Types

Skeletal Muscle

  • Description: Large cylindrical cells arranged in parallel with multiple nuclei and striations.

  • Functions: Allows voluntary motion and control.

  • Locations: Attached to the skeleton, in circular muscles around the urethra, and anal canal.

Cardiac Muscle

  • Description: Large striated cells with a single nucleus per cell, branching with intercalated discs.

  • Functions: Alternates between contraction and relaxation.

  • Locations: Found in the heart wall.

Smooth Muscle

  • Description: Small spindle-shaped cells with a single central nucleus.

  • Functions: Involved in contraction.

  • Locations: Found in the walls of hollow organs, such as the erector pili muscle.

Nervous Tissue

  • Description: Large neurons scattered among smaller supportive cells (glial cells).

  • Functions: Responsible for the transfer of information.

  • Locations: Mainly found within the cranial and vertebral canals.
